Something about an area of Russia broke away to join Georgia and Russia want to re-annex them or summit'.

Tell you what, they picked a good day to do it, with the Olympic Games, the symbol of international harmony and peace, starting.

There are 2 autonomous regions in the North of Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) They're both pushing for greater independence (South Ossetia for Union with North Ossetia - an autonomous region of Russia). Georgia is resisting because both areas are also home to large Georgian populations.

Russia is heavily involved because the majority of South Ossetia hold Russian passports.

Although I think I prefer Cal's answer
