Having a really hard time sleeping the past couple of months, i average maybe 1-2 hours sleep a night and some nights i don't sleep at all. every night i lie in bed in darkness for hours trying to sleep and nothing happens, i just lie there getting frustrated and stressed that i've got to spend another day at work being barely functional due to tiredness.

Im thinking about going to the doctor and getting prescribed some sleeping pills, i've tried the usual over the counter stuff but it doesn't work, even ordered melatonin from the states and again it did nothing. My worry is that everyone tells me to avoid prescribed sleeping pills as its very easy to become too reliant on them.

Anyone here got any experience ? If so what pills did you get prescribed and how easy was it to get off them and get back to sleeping normally without the aid of them ? I need to get this problem sorted, its gonna be the death of me otherwise, i look and feel like christen bale in the machinist at the moment.

The doc will not prescribe you anything long term. A weeks supply at the most. Try taking them but keep one aside for when you run out, and try not to use it, but see it as a 'just in case' pill.

Then figure out what is really bothering you. Pills are not the solution.

I was on sleeping pills from my gp a few years, they did help but its only a short term fix.

I accepted that I'm going to have issues with sleep and relaxed myself regarding it. Exercise will help with the stress, id see if you could an appointment with a sleep specialist.

Well my mums recently diagnosed with cancer but i don't feel like thats causing it, i dunno what is... i just need some good sleep and i don't see it coming anytime soon unless i take some proper hardcore pills. I just want to feel human again, if i had the odd day of good sleep now and then it wouldn't be so bad as i'd have some hope of being able to sleep each evening but as it stands i get in bed knowing its pretty much pointless and that I'm just going to be lying their for hours.

Anyway booked an appointment with doctor and will see what he says. At this point id do anything for some pills regardless of them not being a long term solution. Plus I'm starting to get worried about getting into [Poor language removed] at work for being a zombie everyday.

It's more than likely your mum's diagnosis that's keeping you awake. If you can't fall asleep, don't just lie there get up and do something else. Read, watch tv anything.

I'd have a word with your manager and HR and make them aware of the situation. Best to be upfront and honest with them.

I had the same issue a few years ago which went on for some time. I was prescribed Zoplicone which didn't really do much to help. I also was referred to a sleep specialist which again didn't help. The main thing to do is to look at any underlining issues or worries you have and fix those. Don't try and force sleep as that makes it worse. Avoid using your phone/laptop just before bed and you could try reading/writing anything to help you relax.

tell yr hr Dept mate as if you are on tablets ect it could cause you some side affects, better safe than sorry.
working shifts i have had periods of this find it helps to get in a pattern of eating at a certain times, not having anything to drink after about 9pm , and stay of computers games or the web near bed time , some studies say it takes one to two hours to relax to normal brain activity after using them. try reading instead or listening to the radio bbc, radio 4 x has plays on at night , seem to relax you if you just put the lights out and put them on,takes your mind of stuff,
hope you get well soon mate
