That surely HAS to be a mistake.......... I'd generally expect somebody for that role to be 'at least' double that.

Straight from the HR fellas mouth mate, and thats the HR at the actual hotel as opposed to some central HR Dept that may not know the full details.
The fact that there is nothing on top of minimum wage with regard to shift pay stunned me.

In my almost constant job searching I just saw a job advertised for an Engineer at Marriott Worsley Park which if you don't know it is a rather plush resort just along the East Lancs Rd from me & just off M62.

The job was for a multi-skilled engineer to carry out various maintenance tasks around the Hotel, Resort & Golf Course. I contacted their HR Dept to enquire and obtain some more details.

Work Hours =40 per week - Cover is 24/7 (what I expected tbh) so days/nights/weekends have to be worked incl also being on call at times in case anything major happens that requires more people to attend to than are on duty.

Then we got to the bit that we all want to know but is often omitted i.e. PAY

I was told that the Salary is £15,000, nothing on top of that with regard to any kind of shift pay whatsoever despite having to work days, nights, weekends. No overtime payments so when on call if you have to go in & do extra hours you don't get anything extra.
(min wage, 40 hours a week is about £10 per week behind that)

Now I don't think any person on here no matter what their political persuasion is can tell me that the wage on offer there is fair & just. A qualified position being paid basically minimum wage for having to be in there at any hour of the day ? & we're talking 1 of the worlds biggest leisure corporations here, I am both disgusted & gobsmacked by the fact that they are paying and allowed to pay a wage that is so low.

The other reality as well is that some poor sod that's signing on is going to be FORCED to take that job whilst the Marriott group get away with making vast profits & having wages subsidised by the UK tax payers in the form of Tax Credits & the likes of Ian Duncan Smith,Hunt, Osborne,Cameron & some of the press vilify the poor bugger that's doing the job and in receipt of the tax credits.

I refuse to believe that anyone on here can say that the wage on offer there is anything short of a disgrace & if anyone at all claims it's better than being unemployed then they should be banned on humanitarian grounds & forced to take that job.

Just had a quick skim mate of same job at Manchester while on lunch, but are you sure it's 24/7?

there has to be someone there 24/7 so a case of having to take turns at covering all hours on all days, obviously you aren't covering 24/7 yourself but will have rostered shifts covering 7 days a week on both days & nights.
Even if it was straight day shift mon-friday it's an abomination for any qualified position, free breakfast, dinner & tea wouldnt even make it attractive in any way.

Staggering, and very sad.

All for work ethic and rolling sleeves up, "a jobs a job" but that's exploitative.

It is an absolute disgrace for what is being asked of the person. You would make far more money setting up a gardening services business........

often thought that there's probably money to be made with a Quad-bike mower doing contract mowing.
Our estate (newish) the mowing of grass etc isn't the responsibility of the council and whoevers responsibility it is contracts everything out, they do a rubbish job tbh, the open spaces arent tidied, there are weeds along the edge of the tarmac things like that. now from what I've seen they come once a month & I reckon about 5 of them, I reckon that the actual amount being paid out by whoever to whoever ? would be an amount that would give me a decentish income each month (certainly more than most jobs out there at the moment) and over the course of a month I'd have time to do all of the mowing, weed removal etc and more than they actually do like keeping footpaths tidy, kerbstones clean of algae/mildew, cleaning signs etc generally keeping the place spic & span. Reckon it'd be a job without pressure as well pottering around keeping everything tickety boo and taking a bit of pride in it as well due to living here.

A mate of mine, a wealthy mate, does just that. He started off doing it himself, built up a few contracts with the council and now runs the big field cutters and sidewalk hedge cutters and employs quite a few lads. There's money to be had just doing garden services for homes. Once you find one customer I will put money on them referring you to another. Once people get over 60 they really can't be bothered cutting grass. All you need is a trailer, a decent mower and an industrial strimmer. Gardeners can charge £20 an hour without any problem. Test the water by knocking on a few doors, in the right areas......good luck....

Shocking. I know people who've moved into these roles, and i can absolutely guarantee its not for anything like this price, almost ecrtainly nothing less than double that. This seems, as you say a clear case of taking advantage.

It sounds like a scab firm £300per week on constant call out is a disgrace, and with the current tax credit cuts that salary is useless imo - dodge the bull if they are expecting you to work on them terms what, and how will they treat you if you were successful to get that job, It's skilled work a council worker pushing a lawn mower get that for a 39 hour week!

this is exactly what I try to point out to folk that if they want to pay you sh.. theyll treat you like sh..

needless to say I'm not filling in their online application... which he informed me takes about an hour to complete.
As I said before, some poor sod will be forced to take that job by the jobcentre.

Just submitted another application for the railways but this time in their Engineering Works, I may well be aiming a bit above my station (I really should get paid for coming up with these) but after a telephone call have been encouraged to apply.
It's at the total opposite end of the pay scale to that Marriott job I posted about and is the highest paid job I've ever even applied for never mind had.

Not that confident that I'll get anywhere but then some jobs I've had previously I've been shocked that I've been successful in getting.

It's so different these days the way that recruitment is done compared to in the past, with so much emphasis going on the initial application form in a lot of cases that I can't help thinking that a careers service for adults to help with job applications wouldn't be a bad idea, and not one where you have to have been unemployed for a length of time to get the assistance because in a lot of cases it may be someone hoping to move out of a position that could then be filled by someone else who is unemployed.

Human pigeons!
Rough Runner - Knutsford
£10 an hour - Temporary
We've an event on the 24th and 25th October in Altrincham, near Manchester and need about 6 people to dress up as Pigeons (provided!) and "tackle" or try to stop runners on their route past an obstacle.

The event is an obstacle course event, where we have about 4000 people spread over 2 days running either a 5km, 10km or 10 mile course and will be faced with various large, hard but fun obstacles along the way.

The job entails wearing a pigeon costume we provide and simply standing in peoples way, and kind of "hugging them"!

Check out the video to see what you'd be up to here:

There's free food on site and it's a fun atmosphere, although you'll be on your feet for several hours so be prepared!

In terms of dress, you can wear whatever you feel most comfortable in, taking into consideration the weather - which presently is supposed to be nice!

Apply soonest and you'll be given a telephone interview.

Job Type: Temporary

Salary: £10.00 /hour

Job Location:

  • Knutsford

Im not having a go at anybody here but why the hell are you all so surprised at some of the T&C's with applying for certain jobs ?
Since the government have started making cuts and people are losing their jobs because employees/owners are scared of throwing large investments into projects, there seems to be a attitude of 'a jobs a job', coupled with job centres who just try to get you any work instead of a job your skilled at, or wish to be involved in once trained. The result of this is people are desperate, many will fall for the 'a jobs a job' BS out of need. I know from experience that I would much rather work 40hrs a week or more than spend 1 hour in the job centre. Some people rely on that.
