Is Football Racist ?

Does it honestly make any difference what race he was? He was just a great footballer fortunately for our club. Makes no odds his race or creed.

This idea of a QOTA to raise the number of blacks/asians etc is completely ridiculous. If you are good enough, you get the job. It doesn't matter what colour you are. If I was applying for a job but I missed out because a lesser qualified black person was hired to "get numbers up" I would be furious.

No. I'm just making the point he was black and we should be proud the club have him as an icon.

We are. Very. But his skin colour is irrelevent.

It wasn't back then though. He got an awful lot of stick. He's our best ever player and an icon in British football. Just saying, it's something we should celebrate.

What, we should celebrate the fact he was mixed race? Why? Do we celebrate the fact Neville Southall had brown hair?

when did all this "race" issue start then. it seems a bit like that old chestnut "why did all the jews go meekly to their deaths" next minute - the film Defiance is made and the oxygen of publicity gets to some little known history. black slavers used to sail up the western coast of europe and up to scotland to kidnap whole villages to sell on. true history is a great thing - the rubbish that gets passed off as truth/history in these dark days is only fantasy stories to feed an agenda.

To be fair, I dont think Dave was inferring anything of the sort, but hell, he can defend himself!
What so we're meant to say 'Dixie Dean, 60 goals in one season, Cup winner, League winner, club's all time leading scorer... Oh and he was mixed race!' ?

I think the term used back them was 'mulato' rather than mixed race. We should celebrate the fact our club was open-minded. In the 1920s many other's wouldn't have been that progressive. I know it sounds ridiculous now, but it would have been a big deal.

...although Dean himself sought to avoid questions on his background.

Not my row mate, but of course not.

The point was, I think, is that his race is/was utterly irrelevant. But in the context of this discussion about race, the fact that it is NOT an issue, and in my memory, never has been, is something perhaps not to be "proud" of, but kind of kills any subtle innuendos that have been pointed at us over the years.

I think that was what he was getting at.
