Confirmed Signing Jake O'Brien

Wasn’t him mate, been in other threads.

Only seen him a handful of times, including his Ireland appearance against Portugal. I think the concerns that people have over him are valid but they’re easily coachable under Sean Dyche.

I’d agree that he’s more of a “raw” Branthwaite. I think for £17million, in this day & age, is a cracking signing. Has an incredibly high ceiling if Dyche can get him drilled

Dyche is probably the best manager in England to polish him. Also, training and playing with Branthwaite & Tarkowski + having Coleman there should ease him into things much faster.

I saw a few games Lyon played when they were at the bottom of the league around November and he looked like a walking mistake tbh, think he gave away a few penalties and odd own goal so not much different from Keane. Lyon improved massively when they signed Matic in January window and think O'Brien lost his place.

However he is still young and I assume the plan is to ease him in off the bench and in cup ties. Ultimately Tarks played every single game last year and think Branthy only missed one match after he broke in against Wolves so basically the season rests on those two playing as much as is realistic.

Then in a years time O'Brien will hopefully have featured more and be ready to step in if Branthwaite isn't renewing.

As @blueblueskies posted, he got in the team in October and kept his place all season (did miss a further game or two).

First half of the season they were deep and 2nd half changed their style to move higher up the pitch (based on his scout reports) and he was considered undroppable and amongst their best players.

Also, im sure i read that he improved all season.

How can someone that is 6'6 not head the ball well defensively?!

Bewildering isnt it...fun part was that hes a threat at offensive set pieces too :)

This is basically, agreed , done and dusted. Has made excellent progress over last number of years in particular the last 2. Done by Monday.

Is it fair to compare him to a right sided Branthwaite that needs some polishing?

Not sure why people are so concerned about a perceived lack of pace. Dyche had Ben Mee and Tarks as his centre back pairing at Burnley and they had one of the best defences in the league. Dyche knows centre backs and knows how to set a team up to be defensively sound.

Because Dyche probably wont be our manager down the track.

Top sides typically play a high line so acceleration in defenders is key. If Branthwaite hadnt shown his attributes in a PSV high line he would be worth far less.

Its really the ability to turn quickly and acceleration thats important.

For some reason this is the first signing I’m actually excited about! Could be a real talent here.. hopeful on the others if course.. let’s get it done.

Last summer for me it was the returning Branthwaite & Chermiti signing.

This summer, while i like the business done so far...this is the one that feels like if he's as good as some say and can improve at the rate he apparently has -- we could, albeit a long shot, keep Branthwaite and O'Brien long term. Thats exciting for me.

Media reports have been quoting £25mil for him. Its basically Godfrey + £6mil.

Hopefully hes levels above Keane and more like Branthwaite & improves season on season (apparently improved over last season per the media).

Weirdly the quote from @Victus below states hes not good in the air defensively, only offensively

Definitely right sided.

I posted a week ago that any forward playing against Branthwaite, Tarkowski & / or O'Brien will know theyve been in a game.

It will be very interesting to see how well he does...may even keep Tarkowski out of the team

If theres one position id trust Dyche in, its centre back. Has he ever signed a centre back and not improved them?

Concerns
Slow on the turn
Low acceleration
Poor at defensive headers
perfect

Looks [Poor language removed] going by Whoscored.

Weaknesses: Tackles

Style of Play: Does not dive in to tackles.

Sounds like Keane Mk II

Why lie about something which is very easily checkable.

1. He scored 0 own goals last season. (Not - "gave away the odd own goal")
2. Cannot find him giving a pen away all season
3. About watching him as you claim and partly blaming him for them being rock bottom early season and saying after matic arrived they improved and he lost his place. He didn't even play there first 5 games in fact and further to that I'll quote a guardian article from may last season.

Big Jake”, as he is now called in the Rhône region, broke into the lineup at the start of October and has started every Ligue 1 game since, bar one he missed through suspension. He has been the immovable object in a team that has seen significant rotation throughout the campaign.

He also received the POTM award for December from the team.

So not sure exactly why you're spouting stuff that's completely fact checkable and easily proven to be made up

Nothing like cold hard facts.
