What a debut season - I had massive hopes. He looked a winner. A future Everton captain - since then, he has looked everything like the player I feared he could be. On the ball? He's very limited in possession and offers nothing going forward. Off the ball? Doesn't win the ball as much as he should, doesn't block the ball as well as he could. He runs a fair bit but overall? We miss Gareth Barry more than him. As far as I'm concerned, currently, he has under-performed for the majority of his Everton career. If Martinez goes out the door, this lad, his darling, should be quickly behind him.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, hopefully at his next club Martinez can come in with another big fee for him.

I'd actually keep him and give him one more season under another manager. He's been managed by Martinez since he was 18. That can't be helping him.

How does he compare to previous players in his position?

Compare him to say, Lee Carsley or Thomas Gravesen?

Both could tackle, both could pass a ball forward.

When Gibson come in the side it was such a breath of fresh air to see a ball being played forward from that position.

We play a possession game and he is limited in possession.

I honestly struggle to see what he offers at the moment, the first season his pressing and pressure was a joy to behold. He has just jibbed that part of his game and doesn't seem to get out of second gear - offers near nothing going forward, and his great engine isn't as good as it was.

If he could stay fit I'd still love to see Gibson play for that very reason.

Honestly think that sums him up in three words mate - no need for all the rest

We frequently mock those across the park for overating their players massively - on this lad we are every bit as guilty as they have been with their Lucas, Henderson, allen shouts over the recent years

He is a highlights defensive midfielder - makes the types of challenges and recoveries that look fantastic on MOTD etc, but overall he is just a limited player

Not disciplined to play a true holding role, not creative enough to play the role Gibson did for us, not intelligent enough to play the role Barry does in terms of intercepting/positioning etc and not imposing enough to be a Reid, Keane type destroyer in their.

Just a bang average mid table midfielder, actually alarmed how often his great recovery interceptions or tackles are actually making up for a mistake he has made thats cost possesion in the first place. looks more important and better for us than he actualy is due to Barry being next to him and wihtout his energy their he can be abdly exposed as a 35 slow player

Think the bold bit is key. He looks a lot better on TV, when the camera shows him running round in the shot a lot of the time and occasionally making last ditch blocks. What you see at the game that you don't see on TV is that he basically hides a lot of the time, making himself unavailable or just pointing to someone else so that they get the ball. You also don't see him lose his man quite often when teams are attacking us. How often do teams end up running straight into our penalty area either with or without the ball, while our defensive midfielder is nowhere to be seen.

spot on, i know out of him and carsley whom id choose 10/10 times in the team, and carsley was a seriously limited player, but what he did well he did very well, and allowed others to play, McCarthy for me doesn't improve anyone around hims game

We're at a crossroads with McCarthy. Despite his limitations with the ball he's absolutely essential to the way we play, but in general he's stunk the place out since he started picking up those hamstring injuries 18 months ago.

I can count on one hand the good performances he's put in this season and it's not good enough quite frankly. I find it embarrassing despite him playing way over 300 professional games he seems to need Barry next to him otherwise he's completely lost.

His aggression and tenacity are vital, if he's not showing that we need to find someone else who will.

Besic does everything McCarthy can do, and more.
