That first Martinez season, where both he and Barry played almost every minute of every game, looks more and more remarkable in hindsight.
Barry still at city so thats atleast 3/4years ago. Doesn't make him good anyway
Mate I don't think anyone would ever doubt that he's got ability (for more than McCarthy ever has)...sadly the injuries and the ale have derailed his career.
He is not crap though.
In my opinion Gibson is crap. McCarthy also isn't very good
In terms of footballing ability Gibson is miles better than McCarthy. It's not even close and that is not an opinion, that is a fact.

Oh come on, Gibson is a waste of oxygen, it doesnt matter how well he can strike a ball or how quick his brain is, he prefers to spend his days getting drunk and running people over in his car and we pay him a vast sum every year, I bet he laughs himself to sleep every night.
James McCarthy is a professional athlete, who is very limited, but a superb player at performing his duties on the pitch.
I know its fashionable to hate McCarthy, but hes 20 times the player Gibson will ever be.
I don't hate McCarthy mate, but he's regressed massively from his first season to now. He was incredible in that first season. Injuries/fat contract has seen him regress to a waste of space because he's not very good at football. His strength was stamina to cover everything...Gana without actual footballing skills.
Gibson also has dealt with injuries and off the field problems. He's still a better footballer than James will ever be.
McCarthy hasnt regressed, hes still a very good DM, the problem was Martinez tried to play him as a number 8 and hes not a never will be a number 8.

...ridiculous that he was allowed to play for his country. I said the same about Coleman. If a player hasn't returned from injury to play for his club he shouldn't be available to join an international squad regardless of the country. We appear to be daft, I don't see other clubs being as soft as we are.
I disagree, it happens all over the world, we arent the only team that gets shafted by International managers.
The Netherlands coach slammed his Roma counterpart following accusations Netherlands are responsible for the midfielder's latest injury woes
Netherlands coach Danny Blind has hit back at Luciano Spalletti in the wake of the Roma coach's accusations that Kevin Strootman was "butchered" on international duty.
Strootman missed Roma's win over Napoli and their Europa League draw with Austria Vienna due to a back injury after featuring for Netherlands in both World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and France.
Spalletti blamed Netherlands' medical staff for the influential midfielder's absence, but Blind feels the Roma boss will likely just have been frustrated by his side's inability to beat Austria Vienna.
"I am offended by these comments," Blind told De Telegraaf.
"If he was unable to play due to a back injury, then why did Roma even allow him to travel to the national team after we discussed his situation with the staff and Strootman himself?
"I was in touch with him every day during our training camp to see if he was fit after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines. We even took him off against Belarus when the result was safe with an eye on the game against France.
"He told me he had some back problems [after missing the game against Napoli], but he told me he would be able to play again on Thursday.
"I don't know whether Spalletti was just frustrated that Roma gave away a 3-1 lead against Austria Wien or whether there's something else, but this is a pretty strange story if you ask me.
"We always look after our players with the national team. These accusations are nonsense."
