Joel Robles

Goalkeepers are a strange breed, sometimes they just seem to emerge from the shadows, one minute you think they're bang average the next they're suddenly world beaters. Big Nev just seemed to turn up one day, it never struck me as a gradual thing, he was suddenly brilliant and genuinely the best in the world. Maybe Joel can maintain this form and it could well be down to coaching but there seems to be a real confidence and belief now, good on him.
In and out of team for more than two years at first from summer 81 to December 83 including loaned to Port Vale (!!!) and dropped I think after losing 0-5 to RS at Goodison. Made spot his own during 83-84 and just grew and grew into the truly excellent keeper he became. Definitely not obvious from the start, and had lots of knock backs even to get into non-league where we got him from.

There was an article on the Sky Sports website yesterday ranking premier goalkeepers. Wasn't sure how it worked or who was doing the ranking, but Joel was down at number 25, with loads of second string ahead of him. Obviously the people compiling this list haven't been watching football matches this season.
His record lately is up there with the best that 2nd goal was not a legal goal,
Joel is still making match winning saves at 3-2 the Arta save was top class - Arta looked up,to the sky he could not believe Joel seen that sweet shot coming through a mass of players was saved out for a corner!

love how he wants to start, knows he deserves to start, dismisses playing second fiddle to Stekelenberg with contempt, but doesn't whinge, and just gets on with winning back the job, as he did with Howard last year, and no easy feat for a keeper.

like Ross, he keeps improving. still has flaws (like Ross), but also like Ross a perfect example of the rewards of being patient.

one for the Martinez "pros" column? *ducks*

Definitely a good signing from Martinez.

You won't find many keepers who've worked this hard to be the number 1 at their club. Seems to have gone up a level this year, making some huge saves at important times. And you can't underestimate the calming influence he has in away games like Leicester and Palace, where he was just plucking cross after cross out the sky.

The run-in will be massive for him now. If he keeps this form up he's going to save us £20-30m.

He's nuts, he's flipping huge, he pulls off big saves, he comes for crosses, he cried when he missed a penalty to knock us out the cup, he's got a rear end to die for, he's Joel bloody Robles and I want to hug him

Well said.

Especially the bit about his bum.

How many points has he now saved for us? Top shelf keeper. Happy to have him as first choice to start with next year.
