Joel Robles

Pickford = Dave Marshall etc etc

Theres always a keeper each season who has a good one of pulling saves out of being peppered for 90mins but still lose 3.0.

Robles is in a different class. The ones who have nothing to do all game but keep you in it when needed are the keepers you need.
Think Pickford has the makings of a really top GK. He's about the age Joel was when he first signed for us. As long as he didn't cost too much I'd be made up if we bought him. Think he'll be top drawer in 2/3 seasons.

However for the moment Joel is ticking all the boxes for me. He's improved tremendously over the last 18 months. His decision making has improved so much and so has his command of the 6 yard box. He's been very consistent too, hardly making an error in the last 12 months if you conveniently disregard Sunderland away at the end of last season. Concentration seems really good and he's made some match saving/winning saves since he got back into the team. His attitude is bang on as well.

Just looking at his premier stats this season. He's played in 10 matches if you include the minutes he got against the RS, and our record is W6, D3, L1. Conceded 7 goals and 6 clean sheets. That's CL qualifying stats. At the moment there's probably only De Gea and Courtois who are playing to a similar standard. If he can maintain that for the remainder of the season then I think we definitely have our number 1.

I think he has 12 clean sheets in 31 apps for the club in the PL.

Of those 31 appearances, 13 were last season when the players were throwing Martinez under a bus.

I think it looks quite good tho.

He was without doubt our best player in that run and the only one in my mind who was really trying. Just confirms my view that his attitude is spot on.

Also, those clean sheets stats equate to 15 over a season, which is more than reasonable. In fact, Everton have only bettered that once in the last 10 seasons and in every one of those years would be in the top 4 clean sheets stats in the whole premier league.

if you just look at his stats for this year, the 6 in 10 equates to 23 over a season, and only Chelsea have achieved close to that once. I know it's impossible to make those comparisons but all I'm doing is highlighting just how well Joel is playing at the moment.

Personally I do think Pickford is the real deal and think if he hadn't got injured we may have been in for him in January. Joel has been a revelation and currently deserves the jersey at least until the end of the season. When koeman came in he said he likes to have three senior keepers so still think there will be one incoming in the summer- it's down to Joel to show whether we are looking for a number one or an understudy.

He has improved so much...as other posters have commented, his ability to concentrate over 90 mins without having a lot to do, and then pull off a save at the end which gave us a point is a major plus for me....if he keeps (soz) this up we will save us some money in the long term

If Martinez would of stuck with Joel he might of saved his job, thank god he didnt!!!
I've often thought about that but each time come to the conclusion that it would have only been prolonged. the lack of fitness was always going to catch up with him at some stage.

But certainly by Christmas last season, we would probably have been about 10 points better off had Joel been in goal, and that would have had a completely different outlook for the rest of the season.

Every team and style of football needs a different kind of keeper, or a keeper with particular strengths. Though Guardiola looks a bit silly now with Bravo, he was quite right in his logic; he wanted a keeper good on the ball because that suits the possession football he wants to play.

So what kind of football do we play/want to play? What are our weaknesses in defence that a keeper can help with? As many have said, every season there's a keeper playing for a team near the bottom who looks brilliant, because ultimately he's facing 4 times as many shots as teams at the top. And any good shot stopper looks fantastic in that situation. I myself am guilty of falling into this trap, as I championed us signing David Marshall a few seasons ago. And though he would have been an improvement on a faltering Howard, I do not believe he'd have been as good as Joel is at the moment.

Personally I think our biggest weakness is defending crosses and aerial balls. Our centre backs aren't that tall or good in the air -- we really miss the towering Distin -- but ultimately we don't face too many shots on target as Koeman has us well drilled and we're clearly defending much better as a team. So I think we need a keeper who will dominate the box and claim crosses, more than anything. Additionally, given that our keeper can often go 30+ minutes without having to make a proper save, we need a keeper with great focus.

And thankfully that is where Joel has been excelling. Stek began to look very poor as he lost confidence after the mistake against Boro at home, though it was a foul to be fair, he was weak in the air and bullied by Negredo. It went downhill from there really and he didn't seem to leave his line to claim when he could, and then at other times, he leapt off his line and messed it up horribly. Joel has come in and he's plucking most things out of the air. He's shooting off his line but he's almost never getting it wrong. And, as shown in our last two games, he's managed to go a long time without having to do much and then (both at 0-0 and 3-2 in the game before) he's made fantastic saves at the most crucial of times. And I think they were the biggest factors in us getting 3 points and then 1 point in those games. Potentially 3 points we may not have had with a weaker keeper.

And yet some fans still don't like him. To them I ask who could we get who suits our needs more? We don't need a flavour of the month Hollywood shot stopper. Who out there is doing a better job than Joel at claiming crosses and pulling off saves when he's had nothing to do? However that isn't to say Joel's form is permanent, or that he's suddenly Neuer. But certainly he's doing everything he can to be number 1 for us. Give Joel a chance.

tldr; Open your minds, hearts and rectums, and just let big Joel in.
