John Stones transfer saga

It really will leave a sour taste if Stones leaves, regardless of the circumstances. Why do I feel a late botched bid for Ashley Williams happening and then Johnny Evans signing at the last minute.

Just for once Everton, don't let me down.

I wouldn't mind Williams.....even if Stones stays.

I would rather we signed him than an unknown Argentinian with no EPL experience.

Not Evans, though (n)

Don't go: Lukaku opted to stay at Everton and has urged Stones to do the same

Romelu Lukaku has told John Stones he needs to stay at Everton this year to enhance his European Championship hopes.

Stones faces one of the toughest examinations in football when he faces Manchester City’s all-star forward line on Sunday and Lukaku believes Stones needs this season to prove himself... and Everton is the best place to do that.

The Blues striker knows all about the frustrations of competing for a place in Chelsea’s expensively assembled squad, and he has warned his team-mate not to throw away a “good thing” at Goodison.

“To be fair John is in a good situation at a good club which believes in him. He is playing and is learning a lot from Phil Jagielka,” the Belgium international explained.

“He’s been here two years now but this is the year where he really needs to confirm he is the top player he can be. He is here in a good place. He needs to keep on doing what he’s doing. He has the Euros coming up, so why go?”

Speaking from experience... Lukaku failed to make the grade at Chelsea
Lukaku tasted bitter frustration at Stamford Bridge, making just 10 league appearances despite the hype surrounding his £17m move as a teenager, and he chose finally to cut his losses and leave after three years.

He DOES believe there are opportunities for young players at Chelsea, but explained he left because he didn’t see a clear plan for him from manager Jose Mourinho...while under Roberto Martinez at Everton, there is a project based on developing young talent.

And he believes that is a reason for Stones to stay put for now: “He’s on to a good thing. That’s what I’m saying. We are young, but we have a lot of potential.

“This club has massive potential, with the players we have and ambition manager has. At Chelsea, I thought: I am 21. What’s going to happen now?

“I chose. I chose to go to a project where there are young players trying to develop into top players and win titles along the way. That’s what I chose.

“I believe that I could easily have stayed at Chelsea to fight for my place. But you never know. I didn’t know what the manager’s ideas were with me. I didn’t know what the club’s plan was with me at the time.

“Here, the plan was clear. Bring young players over, grow them into top players and win titles along the way. That’s why John is onto a good thing now.”

And that should be it. Cannot possibly sell him now after the quotes in here

Some very encouraging words there, so worth copying:

Everton will not countenance the sale of defender John Stones to Chelsea before the transfer deadline even if he submits a transfer request, manager Roberto Martinez has declared.

Martinez will complete the signing of another centre-back, Argentina international Ramiro Funes Mori, from River Plate for £6 million, but maintains that he still has no intention of allowing Stones to leave.

Chelsea have had three offers for the England international turned down in the past five weeks, including a recent bid of £30 million.

The Premier League champions are expected to make another approach with an offer of £35 million, amid suggestions that Stones is preparing to force the issue by submitting a transfer request.

Martinez responded by saying he was “not aware” that any such demand was imminent, despite speaking to the 21-year-old daily.

The signing of Mori, 24, for whom a work permit has been obtained, could be interpreted as an attempt to secure a replacement for Stones before his departure.

Martinez, though, says that is not the case, adding that a deal would not happen because it is too close to the transfer deadline for Everton to lose such an important player.

He added that it was common for clubs to tell agents that a player cannot leave beyond a certain date in a transfer window, because there would be insufficient time to find a replacement if they did.

Martinez said: “That is not just something that happens with me or at Everton. It happens at every club where you have an important player and someone wants to buy him. If there is no time to replace him, then it is something you won’t entertain.

“That is not just a hint for John but for players in general; and not just here. If I’m trying to sign a player from elsewhere and I don’t give them time to replace him, then it is not going to happen. That is just a general rule in the transfer market.

“You can only try to sign a player in the last two or three days of the window when he is at a club who are prepared to let him go. If you have an important player you don’t want to let go, then someone knocking on the door won’t change it.”

Since Chelsea’s first bid of £20 million became public in mid-July, Martinez has stated repeatedly that he will not sell Stones, who is under contract at Everton until 2019.

Asked if a transfer request would change his stance, the manager said: “No. When a player has a long-term contract, those things don’t change at all.

“I think the situation has gone too far for any action to change it. If someone comes in from nowhere and puts in a transfer request, that is a different situation. In a saga that has been going on for I don’t know how many weeks now, we are very clear.” Martinez has been critical of Chelsea’s conduct in pursuing Stones, believing that the champions have been responsible for the leaking of their unsuccessful bids in an attempt to force a deal.

He said: “I’m sure there are many players that are of interest to other clubs, and for whatever reason that doesn’t come out in public. Maybe that’s because the team who bid don’t speak in the press.”

I think Stones has shown his class throughout here, Chelski should be paying a premium of £15m for his character alone, take a look at how Wilma behaved while he was across the park.

Respectfully that's complete tosh. No one wants him to leave.

I agree. However, the same doom-mongers were out in force last summer saying we'd never get Lukaku; christ, there were some usual suspects fuming about us not tying up Barry.

Those 'prophetic' musings have long since been forgotten, as will this prophetic attack if we don't sell Stones.

Game, set and match...
After reading all those words, the only far fetched scenario that would see Stones go is Chelsea losing again with a terrible defensive display this weekend and next, Stones requesting the move, and Chelski bidding a ridiculous, panic driven amount of around 50+ mill.
