The Abominable Dr.Phibes (1971)

Vincent Price visits the plagues of Egypt upon those he blames for his wife's death. Death grip frog heads, a catapulted brass unicorn, excessive sprouts and Terry Thomas surreptitiously hand-cranking the evening away.

Very stylised, very silly and all round good fun.
With the delicious Diana Riggs.
Groucho's Fact of the Day : Keith Moon died whilst watching said film.

Watched Laura last night, classic 1940s film noir, great film also minor billing but with a big roll is a young Vincent Price, very distinctive voice, funny thing is I didn't even twig he was in it until I heard him!!
Highly recommend this to anyone he hasn't watched many or any films from that era. About a murder but with a nice twist

Laura's great - would also recommend.

They bottled it when they made it, as it could’ve been so much better, but they sanitised it. The book is a masterpiece, but beyond brutal. ) like a few of McCarthys books )
Blood Meridian, especially. One of the best books I've read in recent years... although pretty much unfilmable.

Been a discussion on here many times over the years - how to film it and who’d play which parts.

I’ve read a lot of stuff saying that they’ve tried and tried to get it off the ground, but it would never get a certificate due to the content - babies being scalped for starters.

They had Owen Wilson down to play the kid !!!

I saw the half-hour test reel with James Franco(!) that was knocking around a couple of years ago... not great, and also confirms that it is probably best left on the page. The only way to film it would be to dilute it, which kind of defeats the point. I always thought that Bone Tomahawk captures a little something of the flavour of Blood Meridian.

I thought it was better than it's given credit for, not as hard as the book but still bleak as hell, and the scenes with the wife heart wrenching

Charlize Theron was terribly miscast as his wife. It was almost a cameo.

The ending of the book ruined me.

The first time I read it, I had to go fir a walk to get my head together.

There’s not many books that can do that to you.

McCarthy is a modern literary genius.

crikey, i dont think i could have coped with much more...thought the film was pretty brutal!

You`re in his head in the book Neil, so you see everything and feel everything through his eyes.

I`ve read the book maybe 3/4 times now and still choke up at the ending.

You`ve got to be ready to read it, as although it`s beautifully written, it`s just so relentlessly bleak / brutal, it can affect you for a long time afterwards.
