Last Film You Watched

Went watching Stan & Ollie this afternoon. All the ingredients are perfect from performances, sets, costume and direction but the overall story just felt a little lacklustre. Obviously it's rooted in actual events and there's only so much wriggle room but I can't help but feel there's a better story or part of their career to be given the big screen treatment, especially given the personal and professional drama of their Hal Roach years.

All said though it flew over and the longer it went on the more I enjoyed it. Nothing much is happening but you enjoy being with the characters and the warmth of their interactions. It does shift up a gear when the wives arrive and they're both played excellently as well as the smarmy promoter.
It is a very light and slight film with not a lot going on, but it's so warm and sweet-natured that it just draws you in. The length and pacing are spot on, and it just breezes by; I wish other filmmakers would learn from this.

Stan and Ollie. It was a really fun, enjoyable film and refreshingly short with only a 90 odd min run time. Both the leads were excellent and both the actresses playing the wives were also very well done. A nice light chanage of pace from heavier films, recommended.

Went to see this last night ;

Destroyer.

A barely recognisable Nicole Kidman plays a bent, burnt out, alcoholic Detective blazing a trail of revenge.

The film starts with the end at the beginning and works its way to the initial incident that kicked everything off.

Nice little twist at the end of the film too.

It’s a very good film and Kidman will probably win awards, but it’s very slow and requires full attention.

Sounds a bit like Memento. Comparable?

Watched a film called Upgrade tonight. Never heard of it, and had no idea what to expect.

Really enjoyed it. Indie film released mid year last year. For a low budget film it never seemed that way. Read about that afterward. Not exactly a new idea, but definitely a new way to tell a vigilante revenge story...with a twist.

Twist at the end was unexpected as well.

The Old Man and the Gun

Robert Redford in his last film playing Robert Redford. A true story about a person addicted to robbing banks and escaping prison (15 times). He never used a gun and was known as being charming... So Robert Redford then. Very good classic film making and only an 1 hour and a half. A perfect send off.

Enjoyed this one, especially the scenes with Redford & Sissy Spacek (such as the one in your picture).
