Who were or are you're favourite Liverpool Bands, and what memories do you have to share?

I remember

The Cherry Boys - Kardomah Cafe (top band, top song)

Blue Poland - Puppet nation (one of peels favourites never really made it though)

The Icicle Works - Nirvana, I used to watch them at various pubs around the city centre before they ever got near TOTP

I can also remember some top nights at the Warehouse watching these bands....I'm totally out of touch now with the scene, are there any decent bands around now?

Saw Bunnymen and Teardrops at Eric's in very early days . Pictures on my wall , etc . They were very good .
Icicle works , Flock of Seagulls , seen 'em both . China Crisis , also .
Not really up with contemporary scene though .

Space drummer Andy Parle dies | News | NME.COM

Space drummer Andy Parle diesPolice are treating the 42-year-old's death as 'unexplained'
August 3, 2009 |

Former Space drummer Andy Parle has died unexpectedly after collapsing in Liverpool on Saturday night (August 1).

Parle, 42, who co-founded the Liverpool band with vocalist Tommy Scott and guitarist Jamie Murphy in 1993, fell while crossing a road in Dingle, Liverpool at roughly 11:30pm (BST) on Saturday.

Passers-by rushed to his aid, and emergency services were called, though Parle was later pronounced dead at Royal Liverpool Hospital, reports Liverpoolecho.co.uk.

A police spokesperson said that his death was "unexplained". He added that they are not investigating an assault or road accident in connection with Parle's death, but said they would like to talk to anyone who may have witnessed what happened.

"Officers investigating the death are keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the area around this time, and particularly any taxi drivers using this busy route to come forward," the spokesperson explained. "A post mortem will be held to establish the cause of death."

The drummer played on a number of Space's biggest hits, including 'Female of the Species', 'Neighbourhood' and 'Me And You Versus the World'. He left the band in 1998.

Parle's former bandmate Dave 'Yorkie' Palmer said that the drummer had been "essential" to Space.

"It's the saddest, most tragic end you could have," he explained of Parle's death.

He added: "Space continued to have success after Andy left but the band changed and lost something which Andy had contributed. Even though we had another brilliant drummer there was something about Andy's style which was unique."

Strange story.

I'm Mr Bang out of touch, but with a slight excuse.
Loved the Bunnymen, and the Teardrops. I know Cope is from Tamworth but was undeniably part of the Liverpool scene. Saw him at the Royal Court in 92 amd sill listen to Peggy suicide. Don't know if you'll allow Birkenhead bands but I'm going to mention Half man half Biscuit. Great stuff.

Strange story.

It is indeed strange. I knew Andy and the lads from Space. He left under a bit of a cloud in 98, and he went down hill quite a bit. A very sad end. I thought Space were an excellent band, a very different, unusual feel to them.

Other Liverpool bands/acts I really like: Ian McNabb, Kappa, and Phil Jones (who is one that should have made it in any one of his earlier projects - Afraid of Mice, Up & Running, Two's a Crowd etc. - remember Johnnie & Marie?)

I remember Phil Jones & Afraid of mice, saw them at the state one night... very polished, professional with a unique sound, I think there album was produced by Tony Visconti (Bowies producer) but alas they faded away, I hear that Phil is still doing the pub circuit in Liverpool, anyone caught his act?

I remember when Phil Jones booked the Empire and promoted an Afraid of Mice gig himself - sold out!

He is still a class act, seem him a few times recently. Very individual, very professional style/sound.

Thats good to hear, he was and still is by all accounts a top performer, I'll have to keep an eye open for future gigs.....Still got the AOM album on vinyl, and occasionally give it a whirl on my deck....still sounds superb....Im on Fire & Intercontinental are my faves
