Cal, I (and a few others here I think) did it for years, so you should be able to get plenty of advice, even if some of us are old farts...
Lots of difference though between travelling and living somewhere:
If you are living somewhere, are you planning on just hanging out, getting a job, doing a lot of stuff like travelling around where you live? Where are you thinking of (cost of living, likelihood of getting work)?
If travelling, how much, where to, what type of travelling?
I've gone to places with only a couple of hundred dollars in my pockets and blagged my way through. I've gone to other places with a few thousand dollars and blown the lot. Different times, doing different things.
OK, then.
For actual Balearics stuff, chico would probably be your man. I would imagine that there is plenty of work over there as long as you hit a good time and place, and are willing to pound the pavement. (Could be bar work, work with travel companies, construction, whatever.)
You're going to need a fair amount as a back-up to start with (especially if you are going to Oz) but I wouldn't worry too much about it as you can pick up stuff as you go. First of all, if you are or can pretend to be a student then check out anywhere you might want to go that has student work visas (e.g. States, Canada, Oz, NZ) which will make your life much easier. It is possible to work illegally but far easier if you have a permit.
Secondly, if you are going to somewhere like Australia that is worried about how much in funds that you have when you arrive, what you need to do before you go is use all your travel cash to buy travellers' cheques. Then you need to "lose them" somewhere and get replacements. You aren't going to do anything illegal with these "lost" cheques, they are just there as "flash money" so that you can get past immigration if you are short of a bob or two.
Thirdly, use the time before you go to pick up at least the basics of Spanish, if you don't know it already. It will make finding work and working 100% or more easier.
Jobs I did over a couple of decades of bumming: hotel porter, barman, cocktail barman, landscape gardening, carpentry, building site, nightwatchman, travel company casual work (transfer rep or part-time local employee), waiter, fast-food, washer-up, grape-picking, fruit-picking.
When I originally left the UK, I had enough for a ticket to South America, but I wanted to go somewhere to earn some spending money. As the winter was coming up, I picked on Switzerland and spent a couple of weeks getting there and knocking on the door of every pension and hotel in a few resorts. I ended up getting a job as a porter after very nearly giving up a few times. Since the winter season wasn't starting then, I went down to Spain and Portugal and hitched around, staying in youth hostels, and living off oranges, sardines and bread.
I never got to South America...
My advice would be:
i) the people who survive in resorts, finding work and having a good time, are those who are most persistent. Stay long enough and you will find a job.
ii) keep open to opportunities. You may think you want to go to Australia. Life may think otherwise.
Geez Atrottel, you'd have been better off listing the jobs you didn't do.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun though.
