Interesting link. I'm surprised that we are as low as it states. Perhaps North Wales, Cheshire and Greater Manchester (Wigan area) takes account of some of that.

wigan no cos its just a team in a town
hull depends on what they class as in the area cos theres no other teams near them
stoke suprises me cos there were loads of them on the motorway when we wentn so not local.
i'm wouldnt be classed as local, especially as wigan is nearer.

Percentage of support from the local

Hull City 88%
Stoke City 85%
Wigan Athletic 80%
Newcastle Utd 77%
Middlesbrough 76%
Aston Villa 73%
Fulham 73%
Sunderland 67%
West Brom 67%
West Ham 66%
Blackburn 65%
Man City 64%
Portsmouth 63%
Bolton 57%
Everton 55%
Arsenal 53%
Chelsea 49%
Liverpool 22%
Man Utd 20%

like i said, varying areas of 'local' could affect that table.

Man city suprised me as Im in Bolton quite a lot and every one there seems to support city(y)

The Peoples Club!

I think when you look at it in investment terms though you see strong local indiganous fan bases mean nothing in terms of investment its a worldwide market now baby, goes to show the little importance of the new staidium debate.

No surprise the 'big' 4 are the bottom 4 in this regard. Our position doesnt surprise me as much because we do get a lot of support outside the merseyside area travelling in.

It would be interesting to see what areas our support does come from. Outside Merseyside (meaning Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, St. Helens and the like) I think Cheshire and North Wales would account for a hell of a lot. Then there is a spattering from Lancashire and some from Ireland. Obviously there is also those that have moved away and return for games.

I think the stats are skewed anyway because there is no account taken of affiliation to the club or city from people who don't actually reside in the limits of Merseyside. I expect much of our support does have that affiliation in so way or other (through parentage, proximity to ground or city). With the big 4, much of the support is from the glory hunter type. If the big 4 were Luton, Bradford, Exeter and Port vale, then these guys would support them instead. I think our support is much more settled in that respect and far more local.

I was also surprised about them being the lowest % after the big 4, especially since you are far more likely to find, say, a Newcastle shirt on sale in a sports store around the london area than you are to find an Everton replica (can't remember ever seeing one on sale down here). Liverpool shirts meanwhile are naturally huge sellers all over the place.

As people are saying, it must be to do with the fact that everton supporters are concentrated firmly around the northwest, though dispersed enough so as not to be considered strictly "local".
