Love Letter to Everton from Donovan

Good player Landon. Also interesting to see how many members on here start following Everton because of a certain player but end up being life long Evertonians, long after they're gone.

Me, I'm still waiting for the first Dutch player truly deserving of our shirt. Heitinga being the only one getting some credit from me thus far.

Wasn't Heitinga voted our Player of the Year right about when Landycakes was doing the business for Everton?

Such an honest player.
Gave his all, wasn't short of talent by an stretch and seemed a very decent bloke.
Shame he never made the move permanent.

Literally almost crying here.

The one that got away. The fling that I loved.

I’ve heard him interviewed. He was sorely tempted to stay, he loved it here, but felt that he had made a commitment to LA Galaxy.

He was the poster boy for American footy, Jim and Howard. He was under enormous pressure to be the face of MLS, which had not really established itself yet.*

Again one of the things that really resonated with me at the time is that Everton fans online respected his decision to keep his word and to represent his hometown.

He is kind of a strange dude and I think the pressure got to him at the end of his career. He was controversially left off the USA 2014 WC squad after he had literally gone to sit on a mountaintop in Tibet or someplace similar for a few months.

So yeah, I wish he’d gone to Everton.

*MLS is established now and LF had a kit to do with that. still not remotely in the class of the top European leagues but it has steadily improved- I’d put it at top of League One-bottom of the Championship, which is decent progress. Business wise it’s healthy now so I think it will continue to improve. I wish it got away from the franchise model of US sports and went to pro/rel and there has been some discussion of that. In practice there has been promotion as some strong second tier clubs have been admitted to MLS.

More than decent in his loan spells wasn't he? Maybe that's the way to have an Everton career for modern players - come in, start well, get out before a slump in form and being torn down. Now THAT'S a statistical project I want to see - predicting who to bring in and when for optimal impact.

I digress, massive shame we never got to see him in Blue full time. Was at the game when he got his first goal vs. Sunderland

Also notable for tactical genius Steve Bruce bringing on Stiker Kenwyne Jones to stand on Fellaini who was running midfield. It didn't work lol. God I miss comfortable 2-0 wins
