Celtic are preparing a contract offer in January and with them being in a different country the compensation would be minimal and they will offer a decent signing on fee with 25k per week wages with the money they save from not having to pay a transfer fee.

Then we have to pay a bucket load to get him back in 2 yrs...if he would come.

Its not really poor though, is it? It is in your world of throw the youngsters into the team....you are overly biased in that regard in fairness zat.

Its nothing out of the ordinary to see Baines keep his place over Garbutt. I think this decision would be made by the vast majority of managers.

This thing of mollycoddling is just made up in peoples heads. Its always possible managers dont have the character to drop bigger players....but its equally possible he sees both in training and still sees Baines as the better option right now. I certainly don't agree that Baines has been awful so far this season.

My problem is people going with the most negative option, deciding its fact and then fuming based on this "fact" they have just made up.

I don't think putting Garbutt into the side for Baines is what Roberto should do right now, even though I think he deserves it. Wait until we are back playing well (hopefully it's going to happen) then if baines is still playing poorly get him in + on a long term deal

Agreed but if he has a nightmare his confidence will be destroyed. I think the lads got it & we need to tie him down instead of the likes of Hibbo & osman

So who would sit for Garbutt? Baines? He's played decently lately but was great at the beginning of the year. Move him forward? That moves Mirallas, probably our best player this season, to the other side of the pitch from where he plays best.


I want to keep the lad as much as the next but you have to be a bit realistic, the team are really screwed no matter what they do.

He'll sign a new deal and we'll take it from there. Calling for Baines to be dropped, or for Garbutt to be played at left mid is quite frankly laughable. Baines has had a poor season thus far by his standards but he still has half a dozen assists.

Why do football fans seem to operate at such extremes ? A player is either boss or gash, a youth player either needs flogging immediately or signing up to a twenty year deal and starting. A manager is either the messiah or complete crap.

Spot on. We're all prone to being a tit when Everton are rubbish but it's off the scale at the moment.

As I said earlier on this thread, if you were in his boat, 3rd choice left back at a club sitting 12th in the league and were getting offers from Celtic (1st choice and potential Champions League football) or potential offers from that lot across the park, you'd be silly to sit on your hands. He should be in or around the starting 11, be it as sub or starting, not making up the numbers on the bench. If he leaves on a Bosman we'll be kicking ourselves in a couple of years time when Leighton is past it and Garbutt is 1st choice England left back worth millions
