Luke Garbutt

..he looked the part and got into the England U21 set up. He hits a ‘heavy ball’ very much like Andy Hinchcliffe, so is useful for set pieces. He was struggling for game time behind Baines, his contract was running down and his stock was high so I was amazed he didn’t chose to leave on a Bosman. Unlike Barkley, he signed a new deal and went on various loans but surprisingly struggled for a game in the lower leagues.
He was in the team under Martinez and not looking too bad. Then made an naive press statement along the lines of - nobody knew wtf they were supposed to be doing...at, iirc, Newcastle
Martinez gave him the carrot and stick treatment.
Carrot; 30k contract until 2019?
Stick; sent him out on loan to oblivion.

There were times he looked every bit the natural successor to Baines. A bit of pace, tidy feet and a wicked left foot on him. I can't think of many times he's played for us and looked bad. Equally he's had poor loan spells with teams in leagues you'd expect him to be flying at. That said Barkley never set the world alight at Leeds or Sheffield Wednesday. Hopefullu he'll grab this chance and become the player he showed signs of being in Europe for Martinez 3 years ago. Me personally i don't think he can be any worse than Martina and he'll offer far more balance to that left side.

Alarm bells rang for me when he gave this interview while out on loan at Fulham:

"But Garbutt insists the crash, bang, wallop of the second tier has done him a pile of good.

He said: “They’ve ( Everton coaches) have given me tips on how I can perform better.

Things like ‘you’ve got to defend the back post and stop crosses more’. I think the qualities I do have, at times I’ve not really shown."

I'm sorry, but if a Premier League full back is having to be rung up by his coaches and be told that, as a full back, he needs to stop crosses and defend the back post, then there's nothing down for him.

He wouldn't be alone in our defence not stopping crosses. It's my biggest issue with how we defend and we've been like it for yonks.

...it appears successive managers think Martina is a better option than Garbutt. Reading between the lines, Allardyce wants to bring a LB in but if he fails to do that he will consider registering Garbutt. If that scenario transpires, I imagine he’ll still be behind Baines and Martina in the queue.
Is it possible Koeman was a crank, and Allardyce simply hasn't had a look yet?

Eggs, if I not mistaken neither Sam nor Unsie can play Garbutt as Koeman did not register him in the PL squad.

..everything is possible but you would think Walsh and the coaches (Unsworth et al) have a view of Garbutt’s worth. I’m sure Joe Royle will also have passed on his opinion. Surely, there’ll be collective thinking on the player and you’d have to think it’s not very good considering the reticence to put him in the squad.

Allardyce might well come to a different conclusion but I somehow doubt it. I suspect the only chance he has is if nobody else comes in.

..that’s right, Matey. Allardyce has said that he’ll analyse Garbutt this month (largely in training I presume) and make a decision whether to register him in the squad before the end of January.

I reckon he already has and it was just a 'nice' answer...he also may end up putting him in the squad if no-one else is available
