Not a single mention here on GOT, despite hundreds of music-passionate & knowledgeable blues here in the Ale House. I'd never heard of them either until recently.
Combine Carl Orff with Pink Floyd's epic Atom Heart Mother suite (on speed), add tons of Wagnerian drama using an invented language and fill with lashes of hyper-modal fusion like Coltrane/Mahavishnu Orchestra/Weather Report etc...then ingest some alien stimulants which induce musical-hypnosis via repetition and mantra. Magma is proper trance music!
They've been around since 1969...tho' with some long breaks in the 80's/90's. Had regular line-up changes but one constant is band-leader and incredible drummer Christian Vander. Now in his mid-70's there's murmurings this year might be their final tour. This summer they've got gigs in London & Manchester. If you like how they sound, see if you can check them out. I managed to get tickets but there's not many left.
