But surely a net spend of that amount for United is terrible, just ain't good enough if they are to break the top four.

It does, but it must also be taken in context. You can not compare the richest Club in the worlds spending habits with ours. A Club which has smashed world transfer records worldwide for buying and selling players, a Club with the biggest stadium in England, a Club that wins Titles and trophys for fun.
And all this with the fact that they sold 1 player for nearly twice the price it cost to buy Everton Football Club.

Exactly, because they're at least four times bigger than us it means that we've sold two Ronaldos in Rooney and Lescott, value in comparison wise.
