Fans had hoped his stay would become permanent, as did Fernandes, however, his clubs £12m valuation of the player diminished any hope of a permanent transfer

Fernandes: “I’m back at Benfica now, it’s finished for me in England. I enjoyed it, it was a great experience.”

I am already upset at missing the opportunity of watching him play in our blue shirts again. I wish him well for the future and can only pray that some kind of turn around could occur and he comes home to us.

If not, I wish him well for the future, he has a special talent.

I wonder why he got himself into this dual contract mess in the first place. He is not wanted by Benfica or they would not have touted him round the clubs have they have done. It was a pleasure to have seen him play but he did go missing for long periods and he was never worth the money being asked for his services. I have no doubt that many clubs, some far richer than ourselves, would have been in for him if they also thought he was worth a kings ransom, they were not and in the end nor were we.

Best of luck Manny, thanks for your time and do yourself a favour, get out of that stupid third party contract it has cost you far more than you will now ever know.

He is young and at the time probably seemed like a good idea but it will cause problems for him for years to come until someone will pay the exorbitant fee demanded.
