Martinez: Everton players fear Goodison Crowd

We don't help at all. When Stones is having words with the crowd then there are real issues.

You could literally see Ross' confidence falling away after every misplaced pass. The team aren't doing the business but the fans are turning up offering ZERO backing to the team, then as soon as a few passes go astray the place becomes hell for the players.

Forgot the 'they get paid loads a money' shouts for a minute, these are normal people who will be affected by shouts and groans, the lot. They need support, and voice the anger at the end not at half-time or during the game. Noone wants to hear it but our fans right now are only making the situation worse.

I think he's right. And I remember Howard Kendall saying something similar.

Couple of points though. Howard said it after the glory arrived, looking back on the transformation of his team.

Gareth Barry said it in a cleverer fashion just before the first leg against City and it seemed to work well.

So to sum up, Martinez could have chosen his words better or could have timed them better.

I don't know how anyone could miss the booing. It was loud at HT and FT. For only about 10/15 mins were the crowd behind the team, and I don't blame them.
We have such a talented group of players. The cohesion, discipline and tactics are all down to Roberto. I've been in his corner from the start but what he said in that interview... well... I don't like it.

Not buying that. Not one bit.

He didn't say that against Spurs, did he? When we should've/could've got 3 points out of it after a shocking 1st half? The crowd was fully behind them then. Or against City.

He must mean when we are absolute dogger against lesser sides at home and we fart around for 10 minutes, go 1 down, and chase the game.

Think the crowd is sick of predictability.

The crowd was booing after three minutes today mate, just before Besic hit the post.

Three. Minutes.

It's toxic atm. Half down to the team/manager, and half down to frustration and panic setting in way too quickly.

Interestingly, if you go back and watch the first half, the only time Stones actually loses possession is for their goal. After that, on every occasion he gets the ball, he looks well in control. Who panics and starts booing and shouting and screaming? The fans.

I'm not at all saying the fans shouldn't be able to air their frustration or that they shouldn't. But today, and I'll say it again as it's the only way I can think to describe it, the atmosphere was toxic.

Crowd paying £40+ to watch 90 minutes of football - they are allowed to comment and give their opinion on the under-performing players and team.

We have the best squad in decades and we don't want to see points dropped through players being unnecessarily cocky or unreliable players being picked week in week out. If Stones had made an actual defensive mistake like a mis-timed tackle would we be getting on his back? Probably not - but he does the same thing week in week out and gets lucky pissing about the defence - he needs to learn and he isn't.

Jagielka once made a pass back which was too short and a player went in and scored - has he made that mistake again? No.

Spot on mate.

Also, very young players. I honestly can't fathom why people choose to boo their own team when it's quite clear they were giving their all in the second half.

Not wishing to be a pedant, but where does the article say "the players fear the Goodison crowd"?
Roberto Martinez reckons his Everton players play with doubt and fear at Goodison Park and has suggested “we need to make it comfortable for our players”.
I could be totally wrong, but I don't think he's implying the pitch is too hard for the player's feet.
Edit* I don't believe in booing the players or getting on their backs it achieves nothing.

So what that fans have paid? It's an invalid argument. Why pay to boo? To scream and shout at your own players.

I get frustrated when I go, and we mess about, of course I do. But today it seemed like a horrible place to be for OUR team. It was silent at the beginning and then we f* up, and the only thing the crowd does is boo? Ridiculous.

The fans are reacting poorly because the quality on show in terms of performance and results at home is unacceptable. The fans are clearly not the problem, it's the team and manager. I know no home crowd in any sport who accept chronic underachievement and don't voice frustrations.

It's not like they are playing in the bernabeu and the white hankies are out in force. They need to get a grip and show some bottle.

atmosphere is only poor and tense because we have been garbage and he hasnt delivered results. Our home record was top drawer now it's relegation standard.

But it's quite clear that the thinking of 'getting on the players' backs straight away after the crowd have been silent for the first 15 minutes' doesn't work mate.

Fans should support the team. I'm not slating the crowd as a whole, or the fanbase, but it's pretty clear that our problems at Goodison are at least partially down to really toxic atmospheres at a lot of games.

A young side needs support and with that will come confidence.
