2020/21 Mason Holgate

'Ferdinand never great on the ball', ....are you kidding me? He was one of the best ball playing centre backs from the last 30 years. His defending was dodgy, and he worked on it. Holgate, on the other hand, cannot play football at all, and when his defending becomes shoddy, you wonder what exactly he brings to the team.

I meant as in terms of bringing the ball out from defence, ability to drive forward like how modern CBs want to do for the most part now, something Holgate thinks he can do.

Rio's game was composure and assurance. If he won the ball back he'd settle a side, pick the simple pass, let the midfield work. Very rare he'd go on a run or ping a 30 yard racking pass (he'd let Scholes do that). He'd be in the right place was never flustered (unless Torres or Drogba turned up).

That's the aspect of his game I was talking about.

How many fans of clubs sitting above us in the table have you heard say: "I'd like that Mason Holgate in our team"? Yet we think he's an integral member of our squad. No wonder we finished 10th.

To be fair, is there a single player in our squad who has gleaned covetous glances from above? Very few indeed.

Or any current Everton player. And we wont be fighting any club knocking on our door to cherry pick.

Yup, I added a late addendum to my post. I don't think it's fair to Holgate to single him out. We have practically nothing about us playing-wise - and that is where the purge must start. After that, we need to look at Brands. Then the club hierarchy. Then the manager.

Of all the many areas of dysfunction at Everton, the last place we should be directing our ire is at the only proven successful professional at the club. When we get the playing staff right, the DoF is a proven success, and the hierarchy is purged of hangers-on like Kenwright, then we can shine a light on the job the three-time Champions League winning manager is doing.

A sign of how bad our squad is... "He's no worse than anyone else in the team".

He should be nowhere near our first 11. I'd put him at about the same level as Brendan Galloway.

You literally voted him your Young Player of the Season not even a year ago.

That isn't saying much tbh. Last year, there was only him or Calvert lewin who where anywhere near the first team. He hasn't kicked on at all, either. He's making bad mistakes and poor decisions.

So within a year has he, at 24, now as bad as Galloway (Luton Town) and will never, ever get back to the level where you voted him Young POTS?

Again, I voted him young player of the year because there was only a choice of him or Calvert lewin last year (in a season where we finished 12th). Calvert lewin did not have a great season so there was only one choice.

I also voted richarlison player of the season, but he's not even close this year.
