'Ferdinand never great on the ball', ....are you kidding me? He was one of the best ball playing centre backs from the last 30 years. His defending was dodgy, and he worked on it. Holgate, on the other hand, cannot play football at all, and when his defending becomes shoddy, you wonder what exactly he brings to the team.
I meant as in terms of bringing the ball out from defence, ability to drive forward like how modern CBs want to do for the most part now, something Holgate thinks he can do.
Rio's game was composure and assurance. If he won the ball back he'd settle a side, pick the simple pass, let the midfield work. Very rare he'd go on a run or ping a 30 yard racking pass (he'd let Scholes do that). He'd be in the right place was never flustered (unless Torres or Drogba turned up).
That's the aspect of his game I was talking about.
