Agreed. Has he even started a league game. Ever?

nope not a single one, had one season on loan in the dutch league 2 seasons ago and has a few bench apps for the shower across the park and now in the England team, not that im saying DCL should be called up but if your going to pick 1 of the 2 u23 players to be called up you'd pick the one actually getting a game for his club?

southgates face makes me want to punch it repeatedly

I think the cap for Solanke has taken it to a new low. It is more a cap for the club than the player.

I'm not talking about Solanke per se because I haven't seen enough of him to know if he's got what it takes (he looked pretty decent last night to be fair), but I actually think this is a refreshing approach and one that England have been very slow to implement.

I think there's an argument that to succeed in international football you need an extra touch of class - just being a good solid pro who's in a good run of form isn't enough, you have to be a higher calibre of footballer. England's cricket team has done it for years, identifying players with genuine quality and fast tracking them into the set up, rather than picking the players who have the most runs/wickets in county cricket. James Anderson had hardly bowled a ball for Lancashire when he got into the England side and look at him now, and they've done the same this week with George Garton. Trescothick was another one who had a very underwhelming county record but had stood out at junior levels for England and so got the call. If Solanke has looked the better player to the coaches who've worked with them both, it's right that he gets the call up ahead of DCL who let's be honest is only playing for us because of a monumental balls up in the summer, not because he's outstanding.

Agree with it all and it's about time more youngsters got a call up, it's what Germany did prior to going on to be a force!

however I think solanke was called up rather than DCL only because of the club he plays for rather than ability to be fair. not like hes showed much wherever he has been solanke, didn't get a game for Chelsea, his one season playing regularly in the dutch league he only scored 7 and now hes back to the odd subs for Liverpool

southgate is just a total disaster, the one decision which boils my blood Is that Livermore feller, he is an absolute dog of a player who is nowhere near the squad if there aren't any injuries so why not just call some more kids up from the under squads and get them some experience like they have with Winks

Totally agree on Livermore, who I simply don't rate. Funnily enough I think he kind of disproves the Solanke thing though - West Brom may just be the least fashionable club in the league and yet he's starting for England. Also worth noting that Tammy Abraham and Lewis Cook play for Swansea and Bournemouth but both got call ups. Much as I like to blame Liverpool for many things, I'm not sure they have a lot to do with this.

Anyway, Keane has been an absolute disaster so far, and last night's game has probably seen him move even further down the England pecking order. He really needs to get his act together sharpish.

Take it your taking the piss ... you really think that having a cap is an honour now?

Jeffers
Nugent
Gomez
Solanke
Livermore
Cleverley
Etc

Absolute nothing players ,all with England caps

It has been this way for a long time.

Geoff Thomas, Carlton Palmer, Mike Duxbury to name but three from the closing decades of the last century :(

Southgate normally goes with lads he knows and worked with previously. But he's never worked with Solanke so I can't throw that one at him.

Solanke, together with Patrick Roberts, has always been considered the jewel in the crown of his age group, and was still getting games for England despite being totally frozen out at his club. The lad has got something about him. I wouldn't have been unhappy had we brought him in on a free during the summer, and I kinda feel that a lot of the stick he gets is purely because it was the RS who did. Yes he doesn't get a regular game across the park, but they don't often play with a regular striker and he's up against players like Salah, Coutinho, Firminho and Sane. Gomes doesn't get a start in his preferred position either (thank God) and he looked absolute class last night.

Don't like Southgate at all, but I do like the fact that he is giving some of the young lads a try out in these friendlies.

Not sure why this is being discussed in the Keane thread though;)

Right now you can file him under struggling to make the step up to a bigger club.

Complete liability.
Hoping he'll get better with a good centre back alongside him who can actually run, make headed clearnces and organise. But he's definitey not in good form at the moment. And for 30m you d be expecting him to do the basics well.

Yeah, he probably will get better. Jagielka was a mess when he first joined us and that got sorted out.
