Mikel Arteta has said that his penalty against Portsmouth on Saturday was really nerve wracking!
But Mikel kept his nerve and coolly slotted the ball home to make it 1-0 to Everton, which started the first goal of three in a 3-0 win against Pompey to more or less clinch a European place for the blue boys.
Arteta said after the game “It is very important to the club and when I saw the ball in the back of the net, I took a deep breath!”
“James is a big keeper and it made it difficult for me because he could pick up the flight of the ball.”
Mikel was delighted at the performance of the team and was delighted with the other scores going the toffee’s way.
“It was amazing day for us and the fans and we all enjoyed it, Reading and Bolton lost and nothing would stop us!”
Having more or less clinched a European spot, Mikel says the job is not complete and Everton should try and press for the 5th place spot when they play 2nd placed Chelsea on Sunday.
“Although Chelsea have nothing to play for, they are still a great team but we want to finish in 5th spot and that’s what we’re going to go for!”
Mikel has been in brilliant form this year and has been at the centre of Everton’s brilliant form this season and is likely to pick up the player of the season which is chosen on Tuesday.
