Moon landings

Forty years ago, Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

I was 12 years old - young enough to see it as a true adventure but old enough to be interested in the science of it all.

To me, those three guys were true heroes. Three tiny organisms sitting on top of tons and tons of highly explosive fuel being projected into God alone knew what...

And despite all the politics that went with the space race, they went for us all...

For the poor and the rich

For the black and the white

For those with faith and those with none

For the east and the west

For the tribesman and the broker

For the lost and the friendless

For the lowly and the mighty

For the poets and the farmers

For all of us.

They took the risk and stepped into the unknowable.

It's still the greatest adventure my generation could contemplate.

So to those three and all their Russian and American fellow travellers, thank you for breaking the ground.

Maybe one day soon, we'll be back.

I hope so.

I remember it as well. I was 11 years old. It was my last few weeks of primary school. Watched some of it at school, the whole 4th year in the assembly hall crowded round a tiny black & white television. Those grainy old pictures and crackling sound, could only just make out what was being said. I was allowed to stay up late and watch everything with my parents. I remember looking at the moon through my dads binoculars trying to see the men on the moon, daft kid that I was.

It was amazing what these guys did. The fact that space travel was in its infancy only magnifies how incredibly brave they were.

Imagine standing on the moon. It makes my head hurt just contemplating it.

Couldn't agree more. There is an old saying, 'The rewards of the journey outweigh the risks of leaving the harbour'. That to me sums up the attitude of those guys.

I was a week or so from my 6th b'day . Being honest , can't really recall it . Remember me Ma and Da watching it , but nothing meself , which is odd as I remember many games before then . ( I went from a mere babe. )
P.S. It was a STICH - UP . It's in BURBANK , C.A.

Even today an amazing achievement

"Life means venture, To live is to risk. The person that takes no risks, does not really live"

Anyone see that guy confronting Buzz Aldrin about the hoax landings?

He was just insulting him calling him a 'coward and a liar'. Cue an absolute cracking right hook by the old 'astronaut'. Obviously a bit handy.

Apollo 11 astronauts 'never left earth's orbit'

About half way through this ITN report.

Haha that was quality.

Did they go? I'd like to think they did. Although it wouldn't surprise me if it didnt actually happen. But overall i'd say its more likely Mr Armstrong and Mr Aldrin touched down 40 years ago on the moon and not the Nevade desert.

Although you have to feel for Neil Armstrong, first person ever to speak on the moon to the whole of Earth and he screws it up

Yuri Gagarin is the one for me. Never mind the first men on the moon, he was the first man in space. To me that was the big one.

What about the first dog in space. Laika? Poor fecker didnt even get asked.

"hay laika, come and see your new kennel.."

BOOM!

The Right Stuff indeed. They were incredibly brave men. After seeing what happened to the Grissom/Chaffee/White crew of Apollo 1 they must have had balls of steel to get in a capsule.

This event happened two months after I got married, all these years later, I wish my wife was on the moon. :(
