[imga=left]http://images.skysports.com/images/playerpics06_07/Managers/Premiership/moyes-direct.jpg[/imga]David Moyes has moved to quash speculation that West Ham are prepared to pay large sums of money to take Andy Johnson, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill and Gary Naysmith.... ok, maybe not Naysmith.

The Sunday Mirror, The Daily Mail, The Independent and The Times are just some of the newspapers that have recently claimed that West Ham owner, Icelandic billionaire Thor Bjorgolfsson is prepared to write huge cheques to secure some of Everton's key players to ensure their Premiership survival next season.

Everton manager David Moyes reacted by stating West Ham wouldn't have enough money to buy Johnson, nor any other player and went to to question their understanding of the game.

Moyes: "Johnson was a top player at Everton last season and he will be again next season. The West Ham consortium wouldn't have enough money to buy Andrew Johnson or any other Everton player,"

"And for them to think they could shows a lack of understanding of our game."

Chief executive Keith Wyness also added: "We've had no contact from any club, nor would we welcome any.

"While many Premiership clubs covet Andrew, he's made it perfectly clear he's happy to be an Everton player."

After reading about this in yesterday's paper i was pissing myself as well, their Icelandic owner ( related to Bjork ? ) is living in cloud cuckoo land.
Imagine how embarassed the Hammer's fans must be feeling !

To sell or not to sell?

I welcome the initial rebuffal from messrs Moyes and Wyness with regards West Ham's suposed £13m bid for our AJ. I wonder what their decision would be if (when?) this increased to nearer £18m? I have been very impressed with AJ this season, and prolific strikers are a rare commodity, but I also believe we need strengthening in several areas of the team - maybe £18m would be a good price to let AJ go, IF all the funds were channelled into re-building?

Whilst recognizing how important AJ is to us, I believe Arteta and Cahill are much more influential players. Retaining their services has to be the primary aim of the Goodison hierarchy in the close season - something which would be made easier through demonstration of our intent to challenge the 'Big 4' by signing some top quality players. Maybe selling AJ would send out the opposite message, but what if we could use his sale proceeds to sign Fernandes permanently - alongside Reo-coker or Barton and SWP in midfield, Nugent or Bent (the good one!) up front and Wes Brown and Jags in defence?
This wish list could easily hit £40m, and even with a reported increase in TV revenue of over £20m next season, I can't see us getting anywhere near such a figure. I would love to believe we could sign some of the above and retain AJ, but then a heavy dose of realism kicks in.
I believe it will become increasingly difficult to break into the top 4 in future seasons as these clubs will have an even greater bank of resources to call on as income from their success at home and abroad increases in proportion. Spurs are showing the way with the signing of Bale and other rumoured targets (is it just me that sees their supposed targets being of higher calibre than ours), we need to hold on to their coat tails - maybe selling AJ for nearly £20m is our best bet?

its all a press thing at the moment, first wenger says johnson is the 'finished article', then the press start linking AJ with spurs, now its west hams turn.

This speculation emanating from West Ham is nearly in breech of Prems rules on unsettling players, oh yes of course West Ham are immune aren't they. Seriously if Sheff Utd are correct who would sign for a potential championship team turning down the chance of Europe. Everyone has their asking price, as I have said in other threads, but it seems that is a price West Ham cannot reach.

Welcome to the site bud, and I apologise that my first reaction post to yours is negative, but, I strongly disagree with you. I understand your point but selling AJ is a bad idea. The minute you sell a player that has made it obvious he wants to stay, and the reason for selling that player is to finance other signings, do you not think that sends a message to the whole squad that "If you play well this year and help us succeed then your value will increase and we will sell you to bring in players that can enjoy what you helped us to create" I think that sends out a hugely negative vibe through the squad, the club, the supporters and the future signings that you may want to make. Just a thought.

I have to agree with Gaz - one of the primary attributes Moyes has brought to this squad is the tremendous team spirit we have. Players like AJ certainly add to that, and as you say, Gaz, letting him go after one year, even at a profit, would seriously undermine that.

It would be different if he actually wanted away, but by all accounts (mostly his own), AJ is very happy to be a Blue.

"Lets weigh it up. Hammers - Avoid relegation by skin of teeth. Lots of money to splash about although a yo yo team. Last won something in? Massive history of? Everton - Been [Poor language removed] for years but putting something together. UEFA Cup next season. Consistently in top flight and with ambition and a hungry young manager. If any of our players leave for you then you are welcome to them. The bottom line is that you want to be us so bad it hurts. Get over your self delusions on being a big team and smell the warm jellied eels. You bad, bad teds." Poster on the west ham site

good call!
