“There wasn’t enough involvement in the game from Manuel Fernandes,” said David Moyes. “We liked the goal but I think we’re looking for more from an all-round general performance.”

I dont think its fair to judge so harshly when he was played on the left side of midfield.

I think its a fair comment to be honest. He was largely anonymous for most of the game. He also alternated with Arteta on both sides when Arteta wanted to.
He then got pushed deeper when VDM came on and barely did anything then.

When he did touch the ball though, it was class. I just think he lacks that spark to want the ball and make things happen that Mikel has and Cahill has. If he gets signed and gets a pre-season then I think that will come, but yeah I agree with Moyes.

how long did arteta get to settle? and he wasnt played out of position from the start either.

how many games has fernandes started for us? 4 ???

I think to be fair this is a tactic Moyes has employed in the media before to motivate players. I think he did it with Ossie and Cahill too. Both have come up trumps post comments in the media by Moyes.
He could just be softening the blow of being unable to afford or sign MF. Sort of loading the gun of justification early on as it were.

arteta took quite a while to settle. he really did not producing his best until his 2nd (1st full) season.

moyes is saying these comments because he (fernandez) is not an everton player yet. if he said he thought the goal was a wonder strike and he is one of the big 3 players in the team then he paints himself in a corner when negotiating the price.

talk him down and pay as little as possible. we all know how good fernandez is. no need shouting it from the roof tops now.

Spot on Teppic.

I've been rather mixed on Fernandes so far. He clearly has a lot of skill on the ball and his goal on Saturday was outstanding.

He does however seem to suffer from a bit of Ronaldo'itis at the moment in that he wants to beat several players each time he has the ball. I think if he does join us he'll probably play most games in the middle and I'd rather he didn't fanny about quite so much in there. If you look at someone like Scholes, his use of the ball is outstanding and he rarely gives posession away.

So I can certainly sympathise with Moyes but he is only young and hasn't played many games for us so will surely improve with time. The talent he has is clear to see so hopefully he'll be with us for some time.

We need manny badly, arteta is being double up more and more frequently by opponent as they know he's our only playmaker. Manny could help relieve him of some presure. He's creative and technically good, better than osman by miles.

Just needs a decent pre-season I reckon. IF we sign him. Must be unsettling just being up in the air so much out on loan.

Hopefully moyes is doing what teppic said, in playing down fernandes in the media so he doesn't attract too much attention.

we have cahill to come back, so if we sign manny what is our best 4(5) man midfield?

Osman, Cahill, Carsley, Manny, Fernandes, Arteta, Da Silva, VDM & Vidarsson.

That's all of our "official" midfielders, so what dya reckon?

VDM - Manny - Cahill - Carsley - Arteta

Maybe VDM and arteta can switch, cahill to bomb on, manny and carsley to control the middle of the park.

I thought Neville was an "official" midfielder and I wouldn't put too much money on VDM being here past the summer. Carsley is getting on and Ozzie still seems to be a squad player, while Vidarsson can't really be counted.

Cahill, Arteta, Neville - I would say we need someone consistent like Carsley with good distribution to add to that. Whether Manny is that man is, I would imagine, what Moyes is trying to decide.

we need that tackler in midfield

makalele, hargreaves, gattuso, mascherano TYPE, that will patrol the midfield just in front of defence and provide simple options for the defence to play the ball out too - instead of it being the hoof forward technique.

Yes, we need to get out of that hoof it up technique for our lone forward to run after. Not going to be easy for Moyes to change this as I believe it was his only technique when he played for Celtic.

It's a British thing Robert. Look at the Chelsea v Liverpool game. Most of it was long ball football and both have invested millions in players. It's no coincidence that the two best footballing teams in England (Man Utd and Arsenal) both have the best youth policies and coach their kids to play that way from a very young age.

Amen to that Bruce. But youth is being brought on now at GP, Vaughan, Anichebe, Turner, Ruddy, Boyle to name a few who should break through. Intersting if you look at the RS they just buy players now, never hear of any of their youth breaking through. Probably because they cannot speak Spanish!!

It takes a bit more though to address tactics, go out to win rather than go out to not lose.
