Moyes:"that small gap we need to fill"

Chris

a whole wheel of cheese?
Moyes admits he is still searching for that little bit extra that would allow Everton to reach a cup final.

"We played well enough in the two legs but it wasn't to be," he said.

"If you want to get into cup finals it is that small gap we need to fill.

So I've started this thread with the intention of getting your views on what that missing 'gap' in the team is.

It's clear that Moyes is searching for the finishing touches to the team, but does not know how to apply that final high gloss finish or even where to find it.

So it could be a player that we need, or could it be just lack of experience from the staff in training or even Moyes tactical planning in games? or none of the above.

What is it that you think we are missing that would complete the picture?

Personally I think our final bit of polishing could be in the form of a link up player that can put in that killer pass. I couldn't put my finger on who I'd take from the current raft of teams in the league around us, maybe Jenas or Benayoun but I'd like to look European for a big name that would lift the team and bring 'something else' to everton.

I'd also like Moyes to employ a deputy from abroad that has experience of playing in Champions League and UEFA and has a broader experience of foreign tactics. It's clear from our domestic form that we have pretty much nailed the tactics Moyes knows. I think we need external influence now.

I'm not really sure it's one thing in particular because if you look at the traditional big four they each have something a bit different.

Man Utd have a huge commercial engine behind them plus a history of success that gives them the wealth and prestige to attract pretty much anyone they like. Add in a good backroom scouting and training system and they're probably the benchmark.

Arsenal have had the Wenger effect for a number of years and this has enabled them to get the best youngsters from around the world. Now they have the Emirates they also have a lot of money to back that up.

Both of those are largely so because of the dynasties created by both clubs manager. Whether either will remain as successful when Ferguson and Wenger move on is hard to say but both have very good systems in place to ensure continuity whoever takes charge.

Chelsea are a different kettle of fish because they don't have any tradition but a shed load of cash that has enabled them to play catchup. Their first team is obviously very strong because they've invested huge sums in it. The youth team hasn't been strong at all but again they are investing hugely in it so you can probably expect that to be good before long, as you can with the commercial side of things. The key for them is Abramovich.

Liverpool are the weakest of the 'big four'. They have arguably the best history of them all but commercially are the weakest because Anfield is small and their owners comparitively poor. They have been fortunate to have succeeded in the CL and that has bankrolled Beneathus for the past few seasons but it won't last much longer.

Now to us. In the past 18 months we have generally competed with each of these clubs on the field without getting any results from them. Sometimes we hold our own, such as Arsenal in the first half or Man Utd last season. Other times we hang on through determination and grit such as Chelsea this year. I think what we lack that each of the above have is experience both on and off the pitch. We lack the experience of winning and playing at the very highest level. We have plenty of experience of UEFA Cups, we have players that have played WC qualifiers and even in the group stages of the WC itself. But we lack players that have experienced the business end of title races or CL campaigns. I think that's what we're lacking because in the games where we have looked equal to the above we have often made mistakes that have cost us.

I think it's simply experience, knowing what it takes mentally to win against the best that we're lacking. How we acquire that is obviously harder to say. Our UEFA campaign is evidence that the players do learn quickly and we've adapted well to that level. We obviously don't have the money to bring in that experience and quality on a large scale so we're simply going to have to learn it the traditional way. If we can sneak into 4th spot this year then that would help enormously, both from a financial point of view and for giving the squad exposure to that level of competition and belief that we should be amongst it regularly.

We are still looking in the shop window. We are oh so close but until we consistently have results against the so called top four we will be little thought of as a contender its the nature of the beast in this day and time.

I do have a good feeling our day is coming very soon. Not being to controversial we deffo have to move to move forward and have that happen. I love the old girl(Goodison) but I think we are at a crossroads. Deceisons now are so important for our future. Generating revenue is our biggest need at the moment. But at the same time keeping at bay preditors that come in offering quick fixes and wanting part of the pie.

Our 1st choise starting 11 can compete with anyone. And though we have alot more depth than in the past we can't bring on internationals like the big four can. Lampard goes and what Chelsea just puts a better more accomplished player in his place. They'll always be teams that will outspend us.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd., Liverpool, Newcastle, Spurs, and (in maybe 2011?) QPR.

A player who can hold up the ball AND create.

As of right now, only Arteta fills that bill.

Yes, but I think we are too over-reliant on Arteta. The match against Chelsea just shows that only Arteta has the creativity to try and beat the opponents and open up Chelsea's defense. The rest except for Manny just hoofs and cross the ball up. Which comes to the subject of Moyes tactics. Why do we keep pumping/crossing the ball when our target man(Cahill and AJ) are short players. We know Cahill can jump well but its not all the time that Cahill wins the ball in the air against tall defenders. Also, during the match it seems Manny is playing behind Carsley. Manny is a more creative midfielder than Carsley so its common sense that by deploying him as Att midfielder would create more chance for us. Counter attacking opponents would also be more dangerous as he has the pace. Remamber the goal against Man U last season?
Sometimes I just feel Moyes tactics could be improved. Moyes is slowly learning but if we want to beat the top four, he has to learn fast.

Personally, I also think we need good creative wingers who can beat opponents and link up the play with Arteta and feed our strikers. Pienaar is one of them but we need at least 1 more. I'd say Arshavin could be the man since rumour is saying he would also like to join Everton.

So Moyes maybe these are the small gaps we need to fill in order to beat the Big 4. Err, I mean the Big 3. The red [Poor language removed] is no longer the Big 4 coz we are now..haha...

My worry is wtih this is that Moyes thinks we need to spend to bridge the gap. If he doesn't get the backing this may just start to test his loyalty. I feel he wants to bring major success to EFC but if he can't spend then he probably won't get that success and move on.

Truth is we need to look at the way the mancs have gone..we'll never have thier potential to make money like its going out of fashion but we can learn from them

Then look to youth invest as much as is reasonable and we'll just have to be patient we're not bad at spoting kids as it is so a little bit more time and effort will in the long run pay dividends for us.

In the short term yes a couple of creative midfielders wouldnt go amiss but the trick now is not to go spending madly but look to score a bargin or two, always nice if you can :)

I've had massive doubts about DM in the past i really didnt think he could take us any further than good old scrappers but and i'm glad to say this the ginger man has proved me very wrong and i'm more than happy he has,for the first time since the 80's i feel some sort of success is near but we may just have to wait a few more years before it comes to fruition.

I just hope DM stays and see's out the job he's started.
