does anyone have an old programme lying around from the season when moyes took over. i'd love to see the quality of the squad he inherited and more importantly the ages of the players.

it would be uplifting i'm sure to compare quality, age and market value to todays squad!

What was Smith thinking with that team he was building? Did he seriously have no plan? Could he not see that they were mostly all average and old and doomed to a relegation battle?

Compare that team to Utd's and Arsenals at the time. Im really surprised we survived the Smith years and stayed in the premiership.

With as many faults as we can find in Moyes, he is the best thing to have happened to Everton since the mid eighties. He clearly has reduced the age of the squad, he's also reduced the size and he seems to struggle to bring in the players he wants, but one thing is for certain, mostly the players he brings in are vastly improving this team.

If 5 years of Moyes has got us this far, then im very confident that in (if he stays that long) another 5 years we'll see even more improvement.

In fairness to Smith, he ...

Nah, I can't find any excuse for him. I think his mentality was that Everton were a bottom 5 team, avoiding relegation was considered success. When I consider how my pre-season expectations have changed from a few years ago - all I can say is WOW!

I've been playing CM 01/02 recently and it made me realise what a pile of [Poor language removed] our team was. [Poor language removed] Gascoigne FFS!

I remember wanting him to play though, because he could actually pass the ball. That's how bad we were.

there is an interview in an old 442 mag i was reading the other day and smith claims his time at everton was successful. honestly!

low points wake us up to the high points.

yes walter was 'unorthodox' but he was operating under johnson, so a little understanding must be due.

We'll continue to improve if our finance allows. Let's not forget a lot of money were spend on building the team we have now. But I must admit most of it are very well spend.

I am not trying to knock down moyes achievements, I think he did an excellent job by changing us from relegation candidate to european football contenders.

However, in my opinion, everton should never be classified or perform like a relegation candidate. It's unacceptable! My minimum requirement for our great club and our manager will be eufa qualification at least. That's where we belong and that's what our history are all about.
Moyes manage to achieve my basic requirement, and in order to score well in my report card, the next step will be turning us into a force in the league and europe.
That's the next level he need to achieve in my book for me to call him a legend. I'm don't care if you say I'm unrealistic but that's what I want everton to be! Time will tell! Looking good!

Well it was considering he never got relegated and had to put up with a nightmare chairman who sold all his best players without his knowledge.

Was Joe Royle more successful then David Moyes? He won more silverware.

Thing is, I had my season ticket under Smith, and that's why I had to get the funk out. Couldn't afford to waste 300+ on that drivel. :)

May reconsider for next season.

I appreciate every bit of the above.

Now then, its easier to make a crap side into an average side.

its slightly more difficult to make an average side a good side.

its more difficult again to make a good side into a very good side.

and last but not least, it takes something special (*) to make a very good side into a regular top four, CL competing side.

arsenal were on their arse for a few years, after the graham bung stuff and a load of wasted money - that why wenger and his ultra shrewd mafioso style calmness is so revered.(sp)

* - money
- amazing youth crop
- amazing manager
