Its better to keep everything on one topic. Then you have a full history, its neater and you can click the last page for the up to date stuff mate.

no easy way round the multi thread sceanario, unless the software can pick up on keywords and highlight the fact there are threads where this word exists , thus notifying the thread starter that there may be another related thread on the subject...

Believe it or not, there is something in place already.
When a new thread is started, you can add 'Tags' at the bottom.
These are keywords associated with the thread so members can search for them easier. I tag nearly all the threads I start. This way I can pull them back up in seconds.
Try it next time you start a thread guys.
I've also just noticed, this thread has no tags.
