Not easy, but shitloads cheaper. A number of people I know of doing virtual companies mixing and matching around India, Philippines, eastern Europe, etc. Project management's where the money and needed expertise is now (posh words for middleman taking the cut).

One of the reasons why I am moving into a fulltime job. Far too many people out there who are basically lying about what they can do, and posing themselves as professionals.

nick i would atleast talk prices with him (without committing to anything)

i'm not sure how work is right now, but if your business takes off, you might have more clients than you can handle, at which point passing off some of the work, then reviewing it to make sure its up to your quality standards, may not be such a bad thing.

I know enough people in this country who would do the work if I ever needed to pass anything on.

What I don't understand and this is just out of interest. Do Indian people actually work for people in India? Because every freelance contract I go for there is about 15 other Indian based designers undercutting me by about $15 an hour.

But 75% of them can't develop websites.

I actually spoke to an Indian lad recently and asked him about why they charge such low rates, I said you are devaluing your work, and he said that we can charge less because our living expenses are low. So I said well I can get work at $50 an hour in this country, so why would you reduce your rate by about $45 an hour?

He couldn't answer me.

I studied globalisation at college and I know the world is smaller, but I honestly believe for middleware freelancers the prices we can charge are being impacted by those who are willing to do it for peanuts.

People generally go for price over quality, which is a shame.

But I'm hoping to gain a fulltime job with a client so won't be my issue anymore.

But if 25% can, then that's why it's murder to compete on price, and if you don't then it's mostly a matter of marketing and subsequent performance.

(But you know what happened when the "p" word raised its head here the last time!)

How you feeling about the impending change anyway? Disappointed? Relieved? Looking forward to it?

Looking forward to it. If I get the job, but my mind is made up. I want to do it. Regular money, less isolated, decent hours.

It's going to be footy on a saturday, golf on a sunday. 4 weeks off a year paid. Can't wait.

look its just the way the world works, we're victims of an outdated system that has failed to keep up with technological growth, a system based on cyclical consumption patterns that have no relevance to todays needs.

one part of this system is infrastructure development. Basically, England has a surplus of capital that requires large amounts of labor (relative to the third world), india has a surplus of labor with almost no capital. this system is what is not allowing india's infrastructure to develop, because why work for someone in india for the equivalent to 10, when you can work for someone in england for 15.

the reason they're undercutting you is because the jobs are limited in england, so there is very high demand for them. plus the fact that they're foreign workers means they have to compensate for the fact that all else being equal, companies will go to an english worker over an indian. also, as you seemed to infer their work is often worse quality, but if companies can get slightly worse quality for a dramatic reduction in price, why wouldn't they?

now you were saying you know people here you can pass the work onto if you get swamped, but think about it, they'll probably charge that same 50 pound rate you charge. Wouldn't it make more sense for you to outsource it in the same way any company would, so the money goes towards that developer? (if you're reluctant to do this because of patriotism, then i applaud you but from a financial standpoint it makes sense to embrace the price discrepancy rather than letting it destroy you).

and yes, your ability to charge is being affected, but your buying power has also changed. guess where your clothes are being manufactured? your football boots? certain parts to your cars, your gaming systems? we've done nothing to protect the working class workers so why protect the middleware freelancers. if we held them to reasonable labor standards in terms of factories, goods would be more expensive to manufacture elsewhere so there would be more manufacturing in the uk. with less of a western presence in those countries, domestic infrastructure can develop, leading to higher standard of living, leading to higher cost of living. higher cost of living means indian workers can't undercut you anymore. problem solved (y)

Well it's not slightly worse quality mate. It's [Poor language removed] quality.

I'm sorry, India has been independant now for a long time, they have a strong religion, ******* medical marvels, can't use the telephone like but they are good strong workers. So why can't they improve their own nation? I just don't understand it, it's like they've abandoned their own Eastern values to try and get a piece of the Western world.

same with every eastern country...

its the same reason people in beijeing that used to bike to work now drive cars that they don't need, that lead to needless pollution and force other people to drive cars for safety reasons.

and of course they've abandoned their eastern values, because commercialism is a poison. billions of dollars are spent on marketing in the western world, and while we're conditioned to it they're much more susceptible to it because its new.

in answer to why they haven't improved their own economy, its because its impossible under the current system. Right now, because so much more capital exists overseas, there is no incentive for entrepreneurship within india, why start your own company and take the risk when you can work for one overseas for cheaper? that means noone starts those businesses, so when workers make money from overseas companies, there are less domestic goods to buy (because everything is owned by foreign interest), so all the money returns back outside of the country.

Exactly what I said (or tried to say, maybe lost in translation....), and you kicked off massively (y)
