It's a valid concern. You'd want the stadium to be used as much as possible, for conferences etc, but nobody will want to hold any event at a venue that stinks of crap.

Theres no way Everton didnt buy the buildings inbetween. Big real estate purchases are not like buying a house. You dont just enter into a contract, complete it shortly thereafter and are done. In the case of needing multiple pieces of land, contracts are written and have been written for some time, with contingencies that ALL the land is purchased, and that zoning approval be met BEFORE they are required to close. This mitigates risk, and the only case where this doesnt happen if you are absolutely dead certain you will get approval anyway.

Business people know more about this than you and I. If, for example, they need 3 parcels of land, they write the contract on parcel 1 contingent upon them also completing parcel 2 and parcel 3. They dont just outright buy parcel 1 and hope for the best.
