New Everton Stadium

The Commonwealth games is hardly the Olympics. It is a once of event which will go ahead over a period of a couple of weeks in just less than ten years time. Most of the worlds athletic super powers barely know it exists as it doesn't affect them.

Why would a stadium which hopefully will last a hundred years be built around such an insignificant event ?
Agreed, which is why it would make more sense for the council to invest in a modest athletics arena to assist North West athletes in competing for the top athletics prizes (Olympics, World Championships).

Athletics is not as very well attended sport in general; a 15-20k venue with temporary seating to increase it for the CG would be fine and relatively cheap to build.

Dock space is at a premium anyway so I can't see them putting in a running track, the Mystery would be the place to do that. Besides, Birmingham has a great track record for putting on various sporting tournaments so I think they'll get the games. We mightn't even proceed with a bid now?

Indeed, I've only ever seen it mentioned in the context of Joe Anderson wanting it, never LCC themselves.

All this talk about building a stadium for the athletics ?

Sod 'em. Build our own football stadium for Everton Football Club. Why should we invest in something to primarily help others then be left with a athletics stadium. Might aswell bring bobby back and call ourselves wigerton athletic stadium.

Im sorry but I would not want a athletics designed stadium, not would I want everyone telling us that it was given to us blah blah blah.

edit: something like dortmunds or the san siro but smaller (50-60k would be immense, and make a statement of where we aim to be).

Out of interest, are there any decent athletics facilities in Merseyside?

I'm assuming the cycling would take place at Manchester velodrome, which rather makes a mockery of it being a Liverpool games.

But that simply doesn't compute Jacko. Take any of the domestic football stadia in England (excluding West Ham's joke stadium) - how do you get a running track into them and still allow for 50,000+ spectators? Hampden managed it due to being a huge stadium, no way will our stadium be comparable. So I fail to see how our stadium can be build purely as a football ground and still host athletics x years later?

Just tell them to run around the outside and we'll time them. Just like when you want your kids to get something for you, "I'll time you"

Why would it need 50k spectators for the CG's?
