New Everton Stadium

Anyone who wants to know how LOR operate read this:

They are bad faith actors in that industry and have to be cajoled to do ANYTHING which involves trade union recruitment onsite. It does the bare minimum of allowing unions to be present at inductions but that's about it.

And for Everton not to place pressure on them as the client to involve more unemployed apprentices is just not on.

Everton need to do a lot more here or their words about regeneration are hollow.

They have LOR over a barrel with the build, that's why they went for a fixed cost contract. They need to lean a lot more into them over this now.

Have you thought about writing a strongly worded letter of protest to the club ?

If that doesn`t work, you could dust down your old Scargill Donkey Jacket and flat cap and start a one man picket line.

I`ve got an old brazier in the back yard that I could lend you, as it`s getting a bit chilly in the evenings.

How do you define pot stirrers? A picket line?

That's off the charts 'kin mad if so.
Do you remember that old carry on film based in a toilet manufacturer? That’s the type of union activity I have experienced in the construction industry over the years. Little power plays from little men. Hate to break it to you but you will find it very difficult to haul any of these companies over the coals for terms and conditions these days, it costs them too much to get it wrong, as 2019 showed. Yes, accidents will still happen, it would be naive to think otherwise, but in general the LOR workforce are a contented bunch, happy with their lot.

The Unions want on-site facilities to conduct union activity and to make sure the site is safe and continues to be so. But they also raise other issues that can only be helpful for the young in the city.

"The stadium is not too distant from some of the most impoverished parts of the region so our members want as many apprentices on this site and other sites in the region to address the skills shortage in the construction industry. Our quote is to get the youth off the streets and onto the sites. We will campaign to improve the working lives of our member and will not rule out other areas of protest."

Everton in the Community do excellent work with 'disaffected youth' in Liverpool. The two could marry up and get some of the youth, that EITC work with, on-site learning the building trade. This opportunity should not be missed by Everton and union members should be applauded for taking up a stance against non on-site facilities and wanting more apprenticeships.

I would like all workers to have union representation but unfortunately that’s not the way of the world, if companies could only win building contracts if union workers were used nothing would get built. I take it you don’t ask for a valid union card from every worker who turns up at your house to do any work on your house Of cause you don’t. This is in reply to davek
People who do work at your house though are mostly self employed set there own prices etc firms like lor Balfour Beatty etc all have agreed rates, health and safety policy’s etc to not allow someone to make sure that them rules are getting followed is bad so ye can see why there’s a gripe there

It’s taken him 15 months to google an 8 year old article, we’ll be asking for the stadium to be updated before that letter goes in

You explot people when they're not unionised because agreements aren;t formalised over work practices and onsite safety.

Let me ask you: are those Unite union members just out there taking the piss or or you think they may have a point or three?
I'm asking you though.

Not the fellas on the pavement with an inflatable rat.

I want real examples of exploitation in the Everton stadium site.

Absolute nonsense, my son is working for LOR on the HPC nuclear development down here and they operate some of the most advanced H & S and employee development programs around. That doesn’t suit the agenda though does it!
Anecdotal. That's his perception.

I'd take the word of a union over that as they have vast experience of this lot on many sites. They just dont want to recognise trade unions and get round being perceived as anti-trade union by throwing out the crum of inviting trade unions to inductions. I can bet that all those workers cards are marked not to join unite / ucatt though.

They do this for a reason: the hit they'll take on a fixed cost job will be to make sure workers are cutting corners on breaks and safety. Unions wont have it.

That's how this works.

I'm not in there am I? How can I tell you that?

Workers who are in there will want to keep quiet, or they wont have a job to go to.

I cant believe Im having this discussion with scousers.

Unbelievable.

Absolutely agree that more apprenticeships need to be offered and taken up throughout the construction industry. Don’t know how many are on-site, but will try to find out. A small site like that will not support many is the truth. It is not in companies interests to neglect this. I am 62 and spent most of my life in an office, it was pitiful watching fellas my age hauling themselves up scaffolding, but they were often the only craftsmen available

Construction companies never take a hit on a fixed cost job unless they screw up either the bid or the job. They build in risk and contingency to the price of about 25%.

One way to kill that margin is to have a load of accidents.

Absolutely spot on.

This is what regeneration is all about.

Fine words on regeneration need backing up or the optics for Everton will be terrible on this.

You have union reps on site so there’s less chance of that happening , some young lad gets asked to do a job unsafely and is to scared to say no which happens all the time somthing happens he hasn’t got a leg to stand on

Take a cursory look online at how LOR have faired over accident and deaths. It isn't good.
