New Everton Stadium

It's just a piece that doesn't know what it's trying to say. It's fine opening people's eyes to the history of the site on which the stadium is being built, people need to know at the end of the day and learn about it

But you weave in stuff about "Merseyside's historic issues with racism" and then only use two examples which relate Everton, it's a bit agenda-y

The whole piece and podcast discussion become redundant if the FACT that Everton have addressed this 'opportunity' and seized it already had been mentioned....one year ago:

‘What happened across Liverpool in terms of slavery should not be airbrushed out of the city. It is a huge part of our history and we have to face up to that’, commented an Everton spokesperson. ‘There is an absolute desire from Everton to ensure what happened is commemorated in some form’

I still am. But in a constructive way, not as a 'kin Kopite looking to do a hit piece to damage the club.

I don't know how you'd take that from the podcast or the article. Which you haven't read. You're playing the man not the ball.

Hughes may be a kopite but his book on the social history of the city is pretty good and I thought he handled the different voices in the story today with nuance. Happy for you to disagree, but you should probably listen to or read the story first.

Clueless and naive in equal measure.

It was the biggest snide piece by that lot in a long time.

Yeah, as soon as I saw his name attached to it I figured his goal was stirring the pot.

No idea why the Athletic chose a kopite for the piece rather than the two Everton reporters. (actually, I do. their having a relatively poor season so need to point score over Everton who they're "not bothered about")
That's a major reason for it yes.

But the bigger picture is that they are fuming about Everton getting a river-based global profile through that stadium and are determined to devalue it.

Which bits of the podcast that you definitely listened to, did you think were especially snide?
The little matter of leaving out a club statement addressing the matter of slavery. The comments about an Everton banner commemorating black players that wouldn't have been the case 30/40 years ago (isolating Everton as special case back then when racism was rife). Name checking Everton again in relation to a (unspecified and recent) racist issue.

Open your eyes and stop being naive.

You haven't read it Dave and you know you haven't.

Tried to read it

Gave up after a certain point

I wouldn't call it a full on "hit piece" or anything like that but I'm not sure it was written in good faith due to who wrote it, and that's going to be hard for a lot of people to shake

Focusing on racism in football on Merseyside like it was only an Everton issue didn't really strike me as fair to be honest and that's when I checked out

If one of the Everton lads at The Athletic had written it then maybe I'd think differently

Genuinely, I thought he did a good job. I appreciate not everyone will.

Really like what Jimi Jagne said about it being an opportunity for the club also.

I made my way through it, and whilst it was well researched he just couldn't help himself and had to get a couple of digs in.

Didnhe even attempt to talk to someone at Everton about the plans or just decided to copy a paste from an Everton Press Release from many months ago?

This 100%

Felt very much like the "Everton are the go-to example of racism during the bad days" narrative that's been peddled every since Nick Hornby slandered us in Fever Pitch
