New Everton Stadium

I attended a talk about it by historian Peter Lupson. He said Alcohol and politics were the fundamental issues. Houlding was a Tory, orangeman and brewer. Most of the rest were Liberal, tea totallers. The rent issue was just the final straw for an already very fractured group.
Most of us now drink to avoid the pain

For all those fans sitting in the lower bullens or below the stand at the gs, or all those fans with obstructed views. All those fans sitting in wooden stands or main stand denied the opportunity of a half time beverage I implore you ie Everton fc to do all you can to make the move to the new stadium as quick as you can.
With so many fans on the waiting list for season tickets I implore you to give them a chance to see their team.
With much needed revenue from match day experience to help our club I suggest you move heaven and earth to ensure we move in asap.

I have no idea why people seemingly want to move stadium mid-season.

We’re only getting one key cut as part of the overall financing and construction contract. Someone on the Everton staff is defo going to lose that and we’ll be locked out of our own stadium.
Don't worry, Bill will wear it around his neck like a weird crucifix whilst rambling on about bicycles handlebars, boys pens, good times and Uncle Cyril.

I biked up to Ormskirk today and you can see the gleaming stadium trusses clearly from Cleves Hill about 15 miles away.

On a match night with the floodlights on it'll be a beacon.

I remember somebody on some website or other who'd done a study as part of their degree or something about the split. The root cause of it (according to him) is that Goulding was a brewer who wanted to sell his beer inside the ground. The rest of the board were against it. This caused him to bump up the rent to make up the money he wasn't earning from selling his ale. And that caused the split.
I haven't read that he wanted to sell beer inside the ground, but he owned the Sandon pub which was Everton's HQ and some the club Commitee were anti alcohol and were often in dispute with him. He had acquired ownership of Anfield and he increased the rent
by 150% between1887-88 and 1888-89. In January 1892, a Commitee member, George Mahon, found a site North of Stanley Park
which they developed into the first purpose built football stadium in the world.
The early history of Everton FC is a fascinating read.

One thing I never understand the meaning of is "first purpose built football stadium" in the world. What exactly does that mean. Wasn't Anfield purpose built? Does it mean that other sports were played there other than football? Surely every football ground is purpose built and was always? Any ideas? Thanks.
