New Everton Stadium

Merseytravel was shafted by the then Labour Government if I recall. Given encouragement for the bids, initially allocated funding. Merseytravel then undertook some enabling works to combine with other works going on (to try to optimise on costs) only to have the Government pull the rug from underneath them. I was at an event in London when the late Glenda Jackson (then a transport minister) was in attendance and took the opportunity to speak to the Merseytravel DG who was also there - what he said would be unpublishable on a family site like this - suffice to say he was less enamoured by her performance in Government than in Elizabeth....
Yep, they pulled the plug on the basis of rising costs, flat out refused to commit more money to the scheme.

Merseytravel spent something like £71m on the project. I think a joint venture of GrantRail and Laing O'Rourke had even been appointed for Line 1 and all the track had been purchased which was eventually sold for a massive loss.

Tbf, the rug was pulled on multiple tram proposals. They were not a one size fits all solution and had been a bit of a mixed bag up to that point. We were the biggest design and construction contractors for most of the UK's rail/tram systems and were the main bidder for the Merseytram job.

We ended up pulling out because the outline design that we were working to was flawed. Can't remember the name of the company who had produced it, but believe they had little or no experience in tram system design. Coincidentally, I think LOR were favourites to take it on after us, but either didn't have the experience or were cut short by the Government decision.

That said, I think the "Lime Line" trackless tram proposals could be a far more viable and even better solution for Bramley Moore.

Love the latest video by the club. Great shot at 3 minutes as to what it'll will look like at ground level at the north stand. The brick work looks complete at that level and, as has been noted before, you'll be well sheltered from the elements as you're queueing to get through the turnstiles. Nice bit of design. These things matter.
Meis mentioned it in his recent round of interviews, but the fact that all four stands are different internally makes such a massive difference. These modern 'bowl' stadiums that have no internal character come across as cheap and characterless. What we have provides different depths and angles and will ensure the stadium has a unique feel.

The steepness of the stands and the way the roof is going to standover and dwarf all 53k seats should ensure it becomes a modern cauldron.

Definitely looks like a design change on the North and South stands as they look like frosted glass windows now. Can't see them getting covered with the black panels as they looked a little different during the prep work didn't they?

The differences between East and West are pretty subtle. I think he's overplaying how different each stand looks as three stands almost seamlessly blend into each other.

I know many people aren't blown away by how interesting the stand configurations are(aren't). I know I'm not but I'm hoping that this will play into the atmosphere when the stands are full. That's what Meis has promised. Let's hope it delivers.

Think the glass is more for the interior aesthetics with panels over the outside. Shame if so as I think the black framed windows look great against the red brick

Yeah mate I think it looks really cool, very similar vibe to tobacco warehouse and a touch of the Lucas Oil stadium feel. It looks like behind the windows there's just concrete panelling so wasn't sure if it was for the interior or exterior look.

Think it would be great to have the North and south like that, just those black panels are quite overwhelming so would be nice if it was broken up with that look.

Oh well, I guess we'll see in the next few weeks mate.

I know the new place gets a bit of stick because its capacity is shy about 7,000 seats.

However, given what we have seen so far, what ground in the Prem would you swap it with?

I keep thinking about the pints at Spurs with the fancy filling from the bottom. But that probably says more about me than the ground.

I agree, how the stadium enhances the atmosphere will be one of the key factors in judging its quality/success. There can be a subtle difference between designing your home end for atmosphere (generally as many rows as possible under a downward sloping roof) and designing a whole stadium for atmosphere (a dome effect). Ours appears to be mostly based on the latter. The unity of a relatively simple bowl under the barrel roof might capture enough noise to encourage greater "active-support" across the whole stadium.

If that is the finished look, I approve. Gives a real mid-century, industrial look. I like it.
