This afternoon's update guys, enjoy
Interesting discussion on modern stadia design. I've always been far less interested in stadium exteriors than their interiors, and I've always felt that the internal arrangement is by far the main defining design feature. Yes, their are some notable exceptions such as the old Wembley towers for instance.... but generally, I think most of us can more readily recognise different stadiums by the internal views of stands etc. After all, most of us only view those stadiums for the moments it takes to access them.... then spend the next 2 hrs inside. The externals also do not affect the performance of the stadium in any way. Many of the world's greatest stadia have next to no external features of any note.... in fact, many shout functionality or austere blandness itself. The apparent message being that for stadia, the "good stuff" is on the inside.
The plaza is one of the best things about the stadium imo. I never thought I'd be saying that a few years ago. It is like a venue in its own right. It is absolutely something that must be maximized for both visual appeal and bringing in $$$.great vid that sir, it looks absolutely fantastic in the sunshine. It'll look more striking again with the plastic off all the seats which will be then a deep blue colour, the green grass, it will be some sight to behold.
The fanzone has the potential to be out of this world, food stalls, merch stalls, a bit of live music, games on big screens, beer tents.

Well, the San Siro is exposed functionality with numerous Ramps and stair wells on all sides and a flat space-frame roof supported on concrete corner columns. The Bernabeu was simply a large concrete structure and is now clad completely in a metal grill. The Nou Camp was completely austere on the outside and I think the new exterior will be glass and steel. Bayern Munich looks like it's been bubble wrapped with no traditional architectural adornment at all..... these are probably the biggest club stadiums in Europe. What they all have in common is that the real feast on the eyes are the towering internal stands and how fans can watch the action from every angle and height.Whilst overall what you say is true, big clubs will try and make a statement architecturally.
That's the 60k version.
Yes, my attachment also relates to the location and various vistas as you approach, but even Simon Inglis described Goodison's exterior as austere in his books on stadia. There was no dalliance with external architectural flourishes as seen at say Ibrox, Villa Park, Highbury or even Fulham. Every stand was plain brick fronted with no real detailing. Of course in later years every stand was clad with metal.... and as Inglis said, was more reminiscent of an industrial warehouse. However, the same could not be said of the interior with it's classic double-deckers and 2 more modern additions. It was indisputedly the finest stadium in the country for the vast majority of its history.... but always a real plain jane externally.Interesting points Tom but I do not wholly agree, particularly for us. A lot of our attachment to Goodison is in the approach to the ground, its location, the way views open up along terraced corridors and the very quirky external imagery including St Luke’s and Stanley Park.
We could have gone to the outskirts of town and built a bland 60k bowl in a car park with a palace inside including the greatest internal seating layout possible for less money than BMD has cost. In doing so we would have lost some of our soul. The setting, the externals, the internal services and the seating bowl all matter. If any of them are wrong the experience is diminished.
BMD is not perfect but it is a lot better than eg The Emirates. My Arsenal supporting wife, family and neighbours all understand the value to them of the new ground but they don’t particularly like it, let alone love it. It will never be Highbury. Maybe that missing emotional connection is slowly coming as new generations of fans grow up in the new stadium but I think we will have that connection day one at BMD. That is actually remarkable given how much so many of us were dreading leaving Goodison.
There's a Kenwright statue earmarked for there.….presume the Dean & Ball/Harvey/Kendall statues will remain in situ but they would look great on that concourse.
Why on earth would the club leave them there?….presume the Dean & Ball/Harvey/Kendall statues will remain in situ but they would look great on that concourse.
