Yes, it was more like an athletics stadium. The new stadium is on the same site.Juventus had been getting terrible attendances for home games when they moved into the Stadio Della Alpi after the 1990 world cup. The stadium was designed by a guy who had never watched a football match in his life and the fans hated it so much I think it was more often barely half full for games. I was there for a CL game v Ajax on a Tuesday night with an attendance of barely 6000. It was built on the outskirts of Turin with plenty of open space around it and the only place outside was a McDonalds to get any food in. This probably drove some match going fans away until the new ground opened and they saw an uptake when they moved in.
And we wonder why they call us Bitters !!!Moving from a 2 bed council house in Walton to a purpose built 5 bed detached mansion on the banks of the Mersey, set in its own private land, surrounded by high quality landscaped 'gardens' and people are moaning they never got a swimming pool.
Baffles me.
Apologies if I didn't make it clear, I was talking about new GA season tickets (ie those on the waiting list). The meeting I attended with Colin Chong/Richard Kenyon at the Liver building was only a couple of weeks ago. Yes, including corporate season tickets it could be 40k+ in total, but I think people were mainly asking about how many will come off the waiting list. These are the figures i have been told a good while ago . Things could have changed but i dont think your figures are more accurate. View attachment 276498
No probs Tom.Apologies if I didn't make it clear, I was talking about new GA season tickets (ie those on the waiting list). Best get a team that will do it justice then.9000 walk ups is a lot with a poor team, day trippers like to watch successful entertaining teams, we may get an initial boost from the new ground but with increased prices that will quickly fall away if the team is not performing and has no star players!
People talking about 1000s of day trippers who are going to suddenly turn up and spend loads at the club shop are in for a shock unless the team drastically improves, the reason we don't sell lots of merchandise and kits etc is because the team is rubbish and the last thing any sane grown up wants to do is walk round in a Everton top with a rubbish players name on (take you pick of a long list of rubbish players) see the disaster that was the ex-players night that was supposed to be at Goodison with a host of c**p from the past.
Getting it right on the pitch is vital to any successful ground move, we haven't had any great teams or genuine club legends for over 30 years, who are the star players who kids want to emulate or who are begging their parents to come and see?
Not as straight forward as people think for me this increased capacity, also lets see how many people on the waiting list actually take up the option when they are asked for £1000?
I didn't really think they did. You're happy its 53k and not 61.878k? I'm delighted with the overall outcome. The size is the only gripe I'd have IF I had one. Is that OK with you and everyone else who doesn't seem to like anyone suggesting it?I don't
why is it, son? That's a very strange take on it, Justin.
Think we'd struggle to fill an over half a million capacity in all honestyI didn't really think they did. You're happy its 53k and not 60.1878k? I'm delighted with the overall outcome. The size is the only gripe I'd have IF I had one. Is that OK with you and everyone else who doesn't seem to like anyone suggesting it?
I understand peoples point about the extra cost 10k extra would have cost but the ammount of money we've spunked on players since the stadium build started could have covered that extra 400 million or whatever it would have cost to have it as 60+k. We've spent over 100 million on Michael Keane and Andre Gomes in that time. Never mind the likes of Tosun, Mina, Gbamin, Walcott, Beto, Schnederlin, Mapauy ect.
Thanks mate.Think we'd struggle to fill an over half a million capacity in all honesty
I'm actually gobsmacked when seeing this monumental structure rise from nothing , to see it in the flesh to me it's a miracle.
With all the turmoil in and around the club , the financial burden , the dock infil and the huge upgrade to the area all requiring massive funding it's a wonder this was ever built at all.
Add on a world wide Pandemic , Russia's invasion of Ukraine leading to sanctions .
Costs of construction materials spiralling and world finance jittery. Even two lots of points deductions.
Then the most damaging of all losing the clubs sugar daddy main sponsor and Moshiri pulling up the drawbridge
I feared any or all of the above could have led to the whole project being scrapped or at least shelved ( bringing many more costly problems ), this is why it irks me to see & hear fellow Blues moaning "we should have done this , we could have done that" it is what it is.....and it's our stadium.
So against all odds it's sitting glistening on the banks of the Mersey.
About time we all embraced it fully.
State of the art compared to Goodison maybe! Seeing the near-complete stadium now it is hard to imagine a better location and linked to the Moshiri haircut those additional costs probably don’t matter now. Let’s hope TFG is the financial equivalent of the Kevin Brock back pass. Time to look forward.Yes, I've said that 30% increase is quite substantial and may well be more than sufficient for our needs, but let's be clear, for the finances to ever work has required Moshiri to walk away with the bulk of a massive debt..... and let's not forget that it completely hamstrung us and nearly relegated/bankcrupted the club in the process. Almost forcing him into a sale to complete carpet-bagging chancers at the same time, even bankcrupting them (and jeopardising several other clubs) in the process too. Either the greatest act of Owner philanthropy or an example of money-launderer's costly misplaced over-speculation, for which we will hopefully be the unwitting beneficiaries.... if the new owner's prove worthy.
Tbh, "state of the art" is also a bit overstated. True state of the art would probably include either a closing/full roof and/or a moving pitch for greater comfort and multi-purpose usage, with corporates in their own dedicated tiers for greater value/exclusivity, and with significantly more boxes/suites than the current 20-22. I'm also not sure that it is the best available location especially given the additional costs and other restrictions, but yes, plenty to be positive about now that we appear to have finally weathered the calamitous financial situation that was never mentioned in the brochure.
