It will probably happen one day. A lot of this talk started recently because somebody was complaining that we'd hemmed ourselves in and would never be able to expand effectively. It certainly got me thinking about it, and it's a topic I've got no problem discussing, so I've jumped on to a few others bringing it up, even though I'm not expecting it any time this side of 2050.

2050! Don’t worry about it. The stadium will have been consumed by the River Mersey long before then. Global warming and all that

Yeah it’s likely they any increase will be via safe standing for at least the first 10 years or so.
City are constructing behind one of their stands and then the roof will be removed to join the stands. I suspect it will result in that stand closing for the season until the works are done. Any extensions done at BMD would follow a similar route I suspect. 1 stand/roof section at a time to minimise disruption. I doubt any extensions would happen within the first 10 years or so and the economics of it would need to be worked out and be viable. Newcastles proposed expansion of SJP will reportedly cost over £1bn and I think it’s been suggested somewhere that increasing the size of BMD with a third tier would cost upwards of £500m.

So revenue per new seat would effectively be higher than £70 per seat per game.

In a way you are right, that said wouldn't it probably be better for the owners to just reduce the capacity by a thousand or so to gain more hospitality spaces that way instead? Especially if safe standing more than offsets the loss. We currently have 5.5k (I think), plus whatever the tunnel club can hold on a match per match basis. We could also create a few hundred more top level hospitality places by adding boxes between the tiers.

If we add another 500/600 through removing GA seats we would then have 7 or so thousand premium seats, would demand be able to fill them all year after year? It's just something that would have to be evaluated after we've been there for a good while and things have settled down. To me unless we get a state buy out there would be zero appetite to change the general structure as it stands.

So much of this is unknown, isn’t it?

We don’t know if those who shelled out for the premium seating will keep doing so after a few seasons.

We don’t know the new owner’s intentions or ambitions, we don’t know how successful or otherwise the club will be in a few seasons.

I think we all just need to enjoy an amazing new stadium and not worry about making it bigger.
