New Everton Stadium

Cyclists, runners, hotel guests etc use it quite frequently - clearly not loads but it still needs to be accommodated.

Well, trying not to sound glib, they'll just have to deal with it. I went in for a drink after crossing the bridge, the huge swathe of people had passed and it was quite accessible. Also, for many years I have battled against the flow coming out of Goodison. Jutst get on with it FFS. For most it will be a one time experience.

Everton New Stadium Forum Posts Review: A Briefing Document

This briefing document summarizes the main themes, important ideas, and key sentiments expressed by Everton supporters on the GrandOldTeam.co.uk forum regarding the proposed new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock (BMD). The analysis covers excerpts from pages 1 to 8627 across multiple PDF sources, spanning from April 2014 to February 2025.

Overall Themes and Sentiment:

The dominant theme throughout the forum posts is a strong desire and anticipation for a new stadium. This hope has been a long-standing aspiration for Everton fans, evident from the early discussions in 2014 about potential locations like Clarence Dock:

ToffeeDan (April 14, 2014): "On the North Dock Road - Clarence Dock - massive piece of land.. Some piccies for you.." tenaciousj (April 14, 2014): "TD, it has been considered previously."

Over the years, this anticipation has been mixed with periods of skepticism and frustration due to numerous false dawns and a perceived lack of progress, particularly concerning the ownership and financial situation of the club under Bill Kenwright:

degsy (January 26, 2015): "Not being funny mate but we have had enough false dawns to last two life times 'The kings dock money is ring fenced' hmmm, what happened there? We have been fed so much bullshit from Bill and his cronies over the years that it's laughable."

The arrival of Farhad Moshiri brought renewed optimism and the Bramley-Moore Dock site became the primary focus. However, the sheer length of the planning and development process has continued to test the patience of the fanbase.

As the project has moved from initial discussions to actual construction, the forum has become a hub for information sharing (and often mis-information), speculation, and emotional responses to every development, rumor, and perceived setback.

More recently, with the stadium visibly taking shape, the sentiment has shifted towards excitement and pride, although concerns about potential relegation impacting the new stadium experience persist:

Barry Rathbone (November 27, 2019): "Possibly the ultimate 'everton that' scenario is a new stadium and relegation within months."

Key Ideas and Facts Discussed:

  • Site Location and History: Early discussions considered various locations, with Clarence Dock being mentioned in 2014. Bramley-Moore Dock eventually became the chosen site, leading to discussions about its size, the inclusion of the water area in the land deal, and potential heritage issues related to filling in the docks.
  • allen (September 19, 2016): "If the acreage includes the water, the following covers the ~17 acres: If it doesn't include the water, this is ~17 acres:" ToffeeDoug (September 19, 2016): "would a land deal with Peel Ports have to include the 'water' area as such, or is it just the hard-standing area on its own?" Jacko93 (September 19, 2016): "My understanding is that the purchase will be for the area within the boundary of BMD, therefore inclusive of the water area."
  • Financing and Ownership: The financial aspects of the stadium have been a constant source of debate, including discussions about potential investors, loans (like the VIBRAC loan), and the role of Farhad Moshiri and Alisher Usmanov. Concerns about Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and related party transactions have also been raised.
  • Moomin (December 4, 2014): "Depends really, Mike Ashley done it with Newcastle a few years back on the debt. Saves them 9 million a year on interest. He will get it back when he eventually sells, he is not doing it from the goodness of his heart." Lanolin (May 5, 2020): "City's case involved £100m per year of sponsorship from companies which their owner was chairman of, that is absolutely nothing like the situation we're talking about."
  • Design and Features: Forum members have actively discussed and speculated about the stadium's design, capacity (ranging from 55-60k being a frequently mentioned target), and features. Ideas have ranged from the aesthetic use of royal blue bricks to the inclusion of statues and fan tributes. The industrial look of the docklands has been seen as a potentially magnificent architectural theme.
  • Yarrgh (May 9, 2017): "I want a stadium that makes the delegates from Fifa and Uefa wet themselves with anticipation of getting their events staged. I want the stadium to be beautiful and be the standard against what every other stadium is measured against." TheFinnFan (October 18, 2016): "that window crowns that magnificent industrial look imho."
  • Planning Permission and Red Tape: The lengthy planning permission process and potential obstacles, including concerns from UNESCO and local opposition (often humorously attributed to rival Liverpool supporters), have been frequently discussed.
  • vintage-toffees (September 28, 2016): "The docks is known to be the 'statement' option but there is so much red tape" silent bob (November 16, 2016): "At this stage we are hopeful that the fish don't lodge an objection, but knowing our luck..."
  • Construction Progress: As construction began, the forum became a place to share updates, photos, and videos of the progress. Discussions have included the filling of the dock with sand, the construction of stands, and logistical considerations.
  • dublinbluenose (October 1, 2021): "Ship has arrived carrying the sand ready to be pumped into dock" windymiller (October 8, 2021): "The sand in the dock has nowhere to go so once it is in and compacted it'll be a great built base..."
  • Matchday Experience: Supporters have considered various aspects of the matchday experience at the new stadium, including pricing, accessibility, transport (including potential ferry services), catering (Budweiser and San Miguel being rumored), and the atmosphere. Concerns about maintaining a strong Everton identity and not becoming "soulless" have been voiced.
  • maccavennie (September 22, 2016): "It's important that we price it right for mums and dads to be able to make a day of it and take kids with them..." TrailerTrash (March 16, 2023): "A ferry terminal at BMD could work, couldn't it?" edwardcrompton (November 10, 2024): "It's massive but souless...can't describe it any other way."
  • Naming Rights and Sponsorship: The potential for stadium naming rights and other commercial partnerships has been a topic of speculation and discussion regarding the financial benefits for the club.
  • "ITK" (In The Know) Culture: The forum exhibits a strong "ITK" culture, with users claiming to have inside information about the stadium project and club developments. These claims are often met with skepticism and humor.
  • orly (November 18, 2016): "Dan, Dan, he made a play to be the forum ITK but now his cred has gone away because he mentioned 'on Friday'..."
  • Fan Tributes and Legacy: Discussions have touched upon how the club's history and traditions will be reflected in the new stadium, including the "Everton Way" brick tributes.
  • Toffeeslam (March 24, 2023): "So these bricks……are there to throw at Kenwright if he shows up ?"
  • Humor and Banter: Despite the seriousness of the stadium project, the forum is characterized by a significant amount of humor, banter, and in-jokes among the Everton supporters. This ranges from lighthearted remarks about rival fans ("dyslexic kopite," "kopite tears") to more elaborate and sometimes crude exchanges.
Recurring Usernames and Personalities:

Several usernames appear frequently throughout the threads, suggesting a core group of active forum members who have followed the stadium project closely over many years. These include:

  • tommye (often involved in "ITK" and banter)
  • roydo (long-term contributor)
  • allen (provides analytical posts, e.g., on land size)
  • Goat (high "Player Valuation" indicative of forum status/humor)
  • Jacko93 (offers informed opinions)
  • blulouie
  • ToffeeDan (initiated early discussions about alternative sites)

  • BNJ1878 (known for direct and often humorous responses)
  • Exeter_Gently (offers considered opinions)

The forum demonstrates a strong sense of community among Everton supporters, using humour and shared experiences to navigate the long and often uncertain journey towards a new stadium. While serious discussions about the project's details and implications are present, the forum also serves as a space for fans to connect, vent frustrations, and celebrate milestones (both real and anticipated) with a distinct Evertonian flavour.

Negativity and positivity.....

Based on the excerpts from the "New Everton Stadium forum posts," it's possible to identify members who are repeatedly portrayed as negative or positive, although these are subjective perceptions within the forum discussions.

Members Frequently Portrayed as Negative:

  • davek: davek is consistently mentioned by other users as embodying a negative perspective on the stadium and related club matters. He is described as the forum’s "counter-balance" to optimistic views, someone with a "stadium half empty" outlook, and as someone who often presents a contrary opinion. Some users find his contributions "tedious" and accuse him of "derailing every thread with negative comments". He is even likened to Piers Morgan in terms of his perceived negativity. davek himself acknowledges that he tries to put forward an alternative view and cautions against a "Pollyanna view". Another user refers to him as a "cryarse".
  • The Esk: The Esk is mentioned as having a history of negativity and is described as a "parasite" who has "leeched off our fanbase for years with his negativity".
  • Tom Hughes: While Tom Hughes sees himself as raising valid points and backing them with facts, some other users perceive him as being overly critical and attempting to "spoil this thread" by focusing on potential issues and comparisons with past stadium proposals. His posts are sometimes described as lengthy and not fitting some users' positive narratives. Some find his contributions annoying.
  • General mentions of certain posters or a "clique" who are consistently negative across various threads, including the stadium thread, are frequent. These individuals are often accused of "moaning," "whining," and having a "constant negative outlook". Some are suspected of being rival supporters ("Rawkists" or "reds") attempting to stir negativity.

Members Frequently Portrayed as Positive:

It's harder to pinpoint specific individuals consistently labeled as "positive" in the same way as negative members. However, the forum discussions reveal a general sentiment among many members who express:

  • Enthusiasm and excitement for the new stadium project. These users often look forward to updates, drone footage, and the eventual opening of the stadium.
  • A desire to focus on the positive aspects of the stadium development, especially when faced with negativity. They often criticize those who they perceive as unnecessarily negative and want the thread to be a source of optimism.
  • A tendency to defend the club's decisions and progress regarding the stadium.

It's important to remember that these are perceptions based on forum posts, and what one user considers negative, another might see as realistic or critical thinking. The thread appears to have a recurring dynamic between optimistic and pessimistic viewpoints regarding the new Everton Stadium.

When did it start to feel real?......

Based on the information in the sources, the period around September-October 2016 appears to be a significant moment when the new stadium started to feel like a real possibility for many forum members. Before this time, discussions were often characterized by skepticism and references to past failed attempts. However, several developments around this period contributed to a shift in perception:

  • Increased discussion of a specific waterfront location, Bramley Moore Dock (BMD), as the likely site. While other locations like Walton Hall Park had been mentioned earlier, the focus on BMD became more intense in this period.
  • Growing anticipation of an official announcement from the club. Users started mentioning that an announcement might be imminent, suggesting that behind-the-scenes progress was being hinted at or rumored.
  • A noticeable increase in excitement and belief among some forum members. Phrases like "starting to get excited" indicate a shift in sentiment from the prevailing skepticism.
  • Discussions about the logistics of the BMD site, such as potential transportation links and even concerns like the smell from a nearby sewerage farm, suggest that members were starting to consider the practicalities of a stadium at this specific location.
  • Comparisons being drawn with other clubs' stadium developments, such as Tottenham Hotspur's project, provided a tangible real-world context and potentially fueled optimism that Everton could follow suit.

While the formal planning application and the start of construction were later milestones, this period in late 2016 seems crucial as it marked a point where the long-talked-about new stadium began to coalesce around a specific, seemingly viable plan and location in the minds of many supporters on the forum, moving beyond mere speculation and into the realm of a real possibility.

What concerns have been held with regards to transport and transportation around the proposed site??

Yes, there has been significant discussion regarding the potential issues with travel and transportation to the new Everton Stadium (BMD) throughout the forum posts, starting as early as April 2014 and continuing up to December 2024 (the latest dates in the provided excerpts). These discussions have occurred in various periods, reflecting the ongoing nature of the stadium project and the evolving understanding of the transportation challenges.

Here's a breakdown of when these discussions took place, grouped by the dates of the forum posts:

  • April 2014: Early in the discussions, even before a specific site was confirmed, infrastructure was mentioned as a positive aspect of the Edge Lane location.
  • 2016:
    • September: Following increasing speculation about the Bramley Moore Dock site, concerns about transport began to surface. Users discussed the listed dock wall and potential access issues for a large number of people. The distance from James Street Station was also noted.
    • October: The potential for traffic to be relevant was mentioned.
  • 2017:
    • April: A user questioned whether a temporary running track could be incorporated without it being a "bowl," hinting at considerations beyond just the playing surface that could affect stadium design and potentially access. The delay in asking basic questions about design and capacity was also raised.
    • June: The pace of development compared to previous stadium schemes was questioned, implying concerns about the overall planning, which includes transportation.
    • September: The planning application timeline was discussed.
  • 2018:
    • September: The need for transport and logistics to be addressed within the planning application was stated. Specific suggestions like a train station, decent parking, and amended bus routes were made. A fan survey regarding transport issues was also mentioned as upcoming.
    • October: The timing of the consultation process, which would include transport, was questioned.
  • 2019:
    • November: Transport links were specifically raised as a major issue in terms of planning permission, with the idea of a monorail being mentioned, albeit humorously. The BMD location was described as "not a great one" in terms of walking distance from Lime Street, and concerns about transport were reiterated.
    • December: Road improvements and the reopening of the Waterloo line were mentioned in the context of addressing transport links.
  • 2020:
    • January: Accessibility was highlighted as a valid concern for the waterfront location, with a need for more detail on the transport plan beyond taxis, existing Merseyrail, and shuttle buses.
    • February: The sketchiness of the transport plan was noted, even while acknowledging Goodison's relatively quick dispersal rates, and the importance of mass transit links to the city centre/Northern Line was emphasized. The non-viability of a new ferry terminal was mentioned.
  • 2021:
    • September: The transport plan was again referred to as something the club should be able to sell without needing to make misleading comparisons. The limited parking within walking distance of BMD compared to Goodison was brought up.
    • December: The transport provisions for the Kings Dock proposal were questioned, drawing parallels with potential issues at BMD. The current transport strategy was described as "sketchy," relying heavily on walking and existing public transport, with a need for substantial improvement.
  • 2022:
    • March: The transport strategy documents were described as "outline non-technical documents" that referenced analysis docs, with comparisons drawn to the rubbished transport plans for "Destination Kirkby".
  • 2023:
    • February: The existence of a dedicated transport section in the planning application was confirmed.
    • March: The transport information offered was described as "fairly sketchy," with reservations based on local knowledge and the club's history.
  • 2024:
    • September: Concerns about the ease of getting to and from BMD for 50,000+ people were raised, with the transport plan described as "pretty vague" and requiring a substantial shift to public transport. The limited public transport options around BMD and the distance from city centre hubs were highlighted. The absence of modelled dispersal times in the planning docs was also noted. A detailed response defended the transport plan, mentioning extensive modelling, consultation, and specific details about shuttle bus services from the city centre and Bootle. The need to bridge the gap and effectively transport people to and from town was reiterated.
    • December: The "how are we going to get there?" discussion was explicitly identified as an important and ongoing topic. The distance from Sandhills station was debated, and the capacity of Sandhills to handle large crowds was questioned. The vagueness of specific plans for all forms of public transport was raised again. Comparisons were made with Anfield's transport situation, and some users expressed frustration with the continued focus on potential transport problems. The idea that transport issues "can't be issues at this point" was countered by a user pointing out their local knowledge and suggestions for improvement. The transport plan was described as one where "everything gets ironed out as you go," with a perceived absence of strategic planning.
  • 2025:
    • February: The potential for extra trains was mentioned. The capacity of Sandhills compared to Aintree for large events was questioned. The transportation issue was characterized by a lack of strategic planning and potential unwanted headlines. The idea of a new station closer than Sandhills was discussed.

These excerpts demonstrate a consistent and often detailed discussion surrounding the potential challenges and necessary solutions for travel and transportation to the new Everton Stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, spanning from the early stages of the project's consideration to periods closer to its anticipated opening.

Who started the rumour about the pitch not fitting?

Based on the provided forum excerpts, the worry about the pitch not fitting into the new Everton Stadium seems to have emerged somewhat later in the discussions, after the location at Bramley Moore Dock became more certain. While there might have been earlier, more general concerns about the stadium design and size, the specific worry about the pitch dimensions appears to gain traction in early 2022.

Specifically, the user Johnnytotal seems to be a prominent early voice expressing doubt about the pitch fitting correctly within the stadium footprint.

  • On February 3, 2022, Johnnytotal states, "Still not convinced it can fit a football pitch East to west". This post is a clear expression of concern regarding the pitch size in relation to the stadium dimensions.
  • Later on February 4, 2022, Johnnytotal provides more detailed calculations, saying: "I think it's touch and go myself. 105m pitch 2m touchline lines x 2 2m path around pitch x 2 Leaves 41m either end for fans in seats 0.5m per row ? Concourse? Bars? Sounds iffy". This post elaborates on the initial worry with a breakdown of potential space constraints.
  • Johnnytotal continues to express this doubt in subsequent posts throughout February 2022 and even later in 2023.

While other users also pick up on this concern and make jokes or express similar worries, Johnnytotal appears to be one of the earliest, if not the first, in the provided excerpts to articulate a specific worry, backed by some rough calculations, about whether a regulation-sized football pitch would comfortably fit within the new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock. This worry persists among some users for a significant period, even as the stadium construction progresses and the pitch installation nears. By February 2025, after pitch lines have been drawn, there are mentions of these earlier worries being hopefully put to rest.

An FAQ on the new development (using only this thread as a source)

Frequently Asked Questions: The New Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock

1. Where is the new Everton stadium being built?

The new stadium is being constructed at Bramley-Moore Dock, located on the waterfront along the River Mersey in Liverpool. This site is part of the larger North Docks regeneration project. Early discussions in the forum (around 2014) identify this location as a potential site that had been considered previously.

2. When was the idea of a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock first seriously discussed by fans in this forum?

Based on the provided excerpts, discussions about the North Dock Road/Clarence Dock (which appears to be an early consideration of the Bramley-Moore Dock area) were taking place as early as April 2014. By September 2016, there were detailed discussions about the specific Bramley-Moore Dock site, including land acreage, potential inclusion of water areas in the purchase, and logistical considerations.

3. What were some of the initial reactions and concerns raised by fans regarding the Bramley-Moore Dock location?

Initial reactions were a mix of excitement about a potential "statement" location on the waterfront and concerns about various aspects. These included the potential for red tape and planning permission challenges, especially concerning the dock's history and potential UNESCO implications. There were also practical questions about whether the land deal would include the water area of the dock and the feasibility of filling it in. Some fans also expressed skepticism based on past failed stadium proposals.

4. How did fan discussions evolve regarding the design and features of the new stadium?

As the project progressed, fan discussions moved towards the desired design and features. There was a strong sentiment for a stadium that would be iconic and set a new standard, rather than a generic "bowl" design. Ideas included incorporating Everton's history and the city's maritime heritage into the architecture. Fans also debated practical aspects like stadium capacity, pricing for families, and the overall matchday experience. There were even specific suggestions regarding brick color (royal blue) and the inclusion of fan tributes like personalized bricks.

5. What were some of the financial aspects and potential investors discussed by the forum members?

Discussions touched on the complexities of funding, potential investors (including early mentions of John Moores and later more prominent figures like Moshiri and Usmanov), and the nature of loans and investments in the club. Fans debated whether the club was for sale or seeking investment and analyzed the implications of owner financing. There were also concerns raised about Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and the scrutiny of stadium funding and sponsorships.

6. How did the progress of the stadium development (e.g., land purchase, planning permission, construction) feature in the forum discussions?

The forum served as a space for fans to share and analyze news and rumors regarding the stadium's progress. Members discussed the land registry status, the granting of planning permission, and the commencement of enabling works like sand dredging. There was often speculation about timelines, potential delays (e.g., due to UNESCO), and the significance of official announcements versus unofficial "inside information." The forum also captured the growing anticipation as construction became more visible.

7. What role did humor, banter, and fan culture play in the forum discussions about the new stadium?

Humor, banter, and strong expressions of fan culture were pervasive throughout the forum discussions. Members frequently used playful insults ("kopite," "wham"), in-jokes, and football-related humor to comment on news, rumors, and each other's posts. There were running gags, playful disagreements, and a strong sense of collective identity and passion for Everton. Even serious topics were often interspersed with lighthearted exchanges, reflecting the social nature of the online community.

8. As the stadium construction progressed, what were some of the more recent topics of discussion among the fans in the forum?

More recent discussions (leading up to late 2024/early 2025) focused on the tangible progress of the stadium, such as photos of the construction, discussions about the internal layout and features (like potential segregation of supporters in different blocks), and practical considerations for attending matches at the new ground, including transport (ferry possibilities), security (bike theft), and the surrounding area's development. There was also anticipation about test events and potential stadium tours.
