I thought Id write a song about our whole Stadium Blues, but then I realised I Im crap at writing songs. So Ill waffle on instead! I cant pretend to know much about the whole thing. I live on the other side of the world. Another half an hour out of town aint gunna bother me when I come Twelve thousand miles to watch them play.
The way I see it, you cant stop progress. It sounds like a political slogan and probably was, but its true Im afraid. Let me tell you a story about Australian sport.
A few years ago, the powers that be in each form of the football codes, decided that to move their respective games forward. They found that ethnic and local area ties were holding back clubs if rebranded, could become National, and hold wider support. The AFL, popular in Victoria and South Australia started moving their teams from Melbourne around Australia. South Melbourne moved to Sydney and became the Sydney Swans. Perth and Brisbane followed and now they are entrenched in their respective cities.
Rugby league (NRL) tried a team in Perth, but it failed. St George Dragons merged with the Illawarra Steelers, the Eastern Suburbs Roosters became the Sydney Roosters, Canterbury Bulldogs became The Bulldogs, Western Suburbs Magpies and the Balmain Tigers became Wests Tigers and so on and so forth.
The Super 12 in Rugby is a massive success, and it hasnt been around as long as the Premier league even.
The NSL (National Soccer League) disbanded, and all the clubs ended up feeder clubs to another incarnation the Hyundai A league. Teams like Marconi, Sydney United and the rest all vanished overnight. They were obsolete in the minds of the general public. The A League is only in its second year, and we had 80,000 people at the final between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United. Its a massive success. Our association moved into the Asian Confederation and now we can watch a Sydney side playing for the Asian Champions League. Its ace. Finally a National Competition where an Aussie side could well end up playing Man U or AC for the World Club Championship!!!!
Okay my point is that the sports here in Oz is a massiveley competive market. The leagues have to offer exciting play and National competition standard. A club isnt performing on whatever level and they change it. And these clubs had played for 100 years at the same park. Once upon a time they built Goodison Park, and thats where weve been ever since. Do you think we could get a bigger crowd at a bigger stadium? Do you think the facilities at Goodison are outdated? Then build a bigger stadium dammit! South Melbourne were a big club, but when they moved to Sydney, they became a massive club! A sporting team is a brand nowadays. Whatever it takes to make a bigger, better club, to give us a wider support base, we should do.
Marketing wise, Everton has something that only one other Club possesses, that we have never really exploited fully, or at all. Look at the league table and its right there. What's different about Everton than 18 other teams? Liverpool own Liverpool. Why? Coz theyre called bloody Liverpool!! What town is Everton? It doesnt need one, its Global, and thats where they should be aiming.
