Moyes doubts Yakubu’s age

Posted: 2008-02-22 09:44
Everton manager David Moyes rewarded Yakubu Aiyegbeni for scoring a Uefa Cup hattrick on Thursday night by suggesting that the Nigerian striker may be older than he says he is, and throwing a veiled insult at Nigeria in the process.
Moyes, who handed Yakubu a one game freeze on top of an £80,000 fine for going AWOL after the African Nations Cup, stated that the power-playing forward was back in favour, while casting doubts over his age.

“Yak is back in favour now. This was his first game back at Goodison and you always know he’s got that in him,” Moyes said in praise of his match-ball winner.

But then he went on to put a question mark on the striker’s age and insult the Nigerian nation with this unguarded remark.

“What people don't appreciate is that he’s only 25, albeit a Nigerian 25, and so if that is his age he’s still got a good few years ahead of him.”

The striker himself was happy to be back among the goals and declared that Everton could go as far as the final.

“If we keep fighting like that I think we will get to the final,” said Yakubu, who became only the third Everton player to score three goals in European competition after the legendary Alan Ball and Andy Gray.

The goals also took his season’s tally for Everton to 15 from 26 games.

It was said on here ages ago. If it did upset Nigeria, tough [Poor language removed](n)

I think Moyes was just having a joke as it is well known certain players lie about their age, Everton have been bitten once, possibly twice before over this...with Bakayoko and possibly Amokachi.
