Latin only became the common language of scholars in the first century BC.

It remained thus for 1800 years. Sad that it is rarely taught these days as it is the origin of much of modern languages.

Similarly, Greek is about to disappear from Irish schools. I think only one school is teaching it this year and will then desist.

As a boring old idiot, I am currently studying ancient Greek as part of a Master's.
