12 million or 8 million, it's a lot of money, but I think it's all worth it. He's good enough to start for us, and he can get us 5 to 10 goals from midfield. Get him!

Can't remember where the quote was but I remember reading somewhere that DM thought there might be a possibility of a further loan, which seems more likely.

Although I would like to see him here from a footballing point of view, they've had a chance to see him as a person now as well, and, if the club thinks the price is too big a chunk out of what they have to play with, especially considering what we need to do for Europe, then fair enough.

The skysports article was exactly the theme I was referring to in my "Rumours" thread. He has youth and skill exactly what we need. If we buy him now and in a couple of years if we wanted to part with him no doubt we would make a few bob.
There are times when the boat has to be pushed out for example when Harry Catterick signed Alan ball for what then was an outrageous £100,000. All has to do with having a bit of vision. If we do not grab him some other club much to our disgust will step in and not even say thank you.

Sign him up, do not dither twist kenwright's arm.

Not automatically. We've made losses and profits on players. At 12m in whatever currency the potential losses and profits are higher, that's all.

Fine to say "have a bit of vision" but what if your golden vision turns into Kroldrup or Beattie or Davies or VDM?

Added: Given that I don't think our summer spending will or can be substantially over the 12m figure quoted, we either have to sell players to bring new ones in if we take Fernandes, or restrict ourselves to him, fillers, and loans.

Even though I am not sure about one and definitely do not want the other, I would say that Barton and Nugent would be a better alternative to Fernandes (unless you believe that we can go out and sign anyone that we want).

We have spent a long time getting the finances back on an even keel again, and have started to push the boat out more (Beattie, Johnson) on occasion, but let's not blow it all on silly money just because we have qualified for UEFA.

It appears a bit of a mess anyway, firstly he extended his contract with benfica earlier this year, and benfica co own his contract with another 'group'.

when players rights, and contracts players sign, are split up and seperated it makes transfers that much more difficult. west ham got a fine because of tevez and mascherano, we had to wait two years to get da silva in, pompey got their knuckles stung because the original fernandes deal wasnt kosher.

It appears to me that agents and organisations (proactive for example) are manipulating employment rules so that they can rinse as much cash from clubs as possible.

Try our best to get him, forget the amount. he is young, skillful and just the kind of player we need to make the next step.

I'd love to see us pay the required cash for him to stay, and I know there have been big sums mentioned around, but I'm pretty sure they'd already have some sort of assurances of values before they penned the loan deal.

I think DM will also be thinking about the impact on the coffers for more squad players to help fill the potential casualties that the European sojourn could provide. I'm expecting at least 4, but anywhere up to 7, new first team faces (albeit some from the reserves). And of these, I'd be expecting some quality, and not your average Simon Davies types!

£8m no more.

It looks like he's worth more, but we simply couldn't pay it. Let Leeds be a warning...

If they value him so highly, why do they keep loaning him out?

I think we'd get him for alot cheaper than the reported £12m.

I am with Danny on this one. OK, we all agree that he is a quality player and a useful addition to our first team, but 8 mil is the highest we should pay I believe. at least then we may have a possible profit margin years down the line, but I want him with us for the long haul. I want more players with commitment to the cause, something like Yobo has shown this year(may not be the greatest, but has stayed fit and is improving every match still).
