Never seen this before. Bingham stretching it a bit to compare Gary with Best, although at least he said he had 'almost as much ability' whereas one of our ex-bosses would have claimed he was better! He was very talented but ultimately lacked that extra something which would have seen him fulfil that promise.

Gary Jones was a great player in a period when we were average at best. Had he been in the team of the mid-1980s...

I was in the Lower Bullens for that Exeter cup tie. I was sitting next to an Exeter supporter (honestly!). He told me he had left home at 4:00 that morning! I asked him why he travelled such a distance, and he replied that it would probably be the only time in his life that he could see his side play at a Division One ground, and also see his side play at a ground that had hosted the World Cup semi-final in 1966. Couldn't argue with that!

...just reading something from the archives;

By Horace Yates, Liverpool Daily Post, March 11th, 1964;

‘Everton made their most spectacular plunge into the transfer market yesterday by paying £75,000 to Blackburn Rovers for England U23 international Centre-Forward Fred Pickering, to bring the total outlay made by manager Harry Catterick since he took over at Goodison Park in April 1961, to about £290,000’.

How times change.

The caption to that team photo is the wrong way around. It should read 'right to left'! Tommy Ring was a great left winger. Broke his leg at Chelsea, if I remember correctly - never the same player after that.

Yes that is Mick Meagan on front left not front right and Labone is 3rd from left back row.
