On This Day;

On this day (well, tomorrow actually) 5th October 1968. My first trip to Selhurst Park. We lived 35 miles away which might as well have been the moon for a 12 year old in those days. Anyhow, went with a mate and his Dad.
Palace 1 Sheffield United 1. Stood on the old grass bank at the top of the Whitehorse Lane terrace. The Arthur Waite stand was under construction and the main stand still had a standing paddock at the front for the full length of the pitch.
A beautiful early autumn day. Like it was yesterday not 56 years!

…seemed like every team had a star player around those times, who was with Palace then? Maybe Tony Currie playing for Sheff Utd, he was talented.

Tony Currie scored the United goal! We really didn’t have a star player as such. The horribly underrated John Jackson was in
goal, Palace’s finest ever keeper and a young midfielder Steve Kember, who went on to play for England U23, Chelsea and Leicester were the pick of the side that day.
Bobby Woodruff, a seasoned No.11 put Palace ahead. Generally held to be a very satisfactory result as Palace were playing only their second season at that level since 1925 and Sheffield United had only just come down from the top flight.

On this day in 1853 Turkey made a declaration of war and the Crimean War began.
It has been refered to as "one of the most pointless wars in history" and lasted for two and a half years, eventually ending when Russia conceded a few trifling border changes and fighting ground to a halt.
The war resulted in more than 250,000 deaths (many from war wounds and extreme cold, but mostly from disease which ravaged all sides)
Florence Nightingale became a British heroine for ministering to the wounded and the ill. She went on to organise the system of 'Nursing' as we know it today.

….there was a massive workhouse/hospital on the site of the Anglican cathedral and apparently Florence Nightingale had a lot to do with setting up the nurses there.

I recall John Jackson as your star player.

On this day in 2017 the music world lost one its greatest singer/songwriters, [certainly one of America's]

Salute to the great Tom Petty

The Eagles main lead guitarist Don Felder musically trained who was kicked out by Don Henley - lawsuits arose etc - When at musical college he was a great guitarist strapped for cash put an add-in the college magazine for training guitarist - this blond goofy guy came along named Tom Petty - he trained him up to 3 chords - on the guitar, & stated that's as far as I can go with you .....
The blond goofy student stated to him that's OK - I think I will make it in the rock world .....

He sure did .....
