Sad news this morning, the great tenor died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Modena Italy this morning, he had suffered the illness for sometime http://music.aol.co.uk/opera-legend-pavarotti-dies-at-71/article/20070906010809990001

Possibly the most successful opera based recording never 'Nessum dorma' will live in the hearts of football supporters across the globe having been recorded because of the World Cup.

Sadly the three tenors are no more:(

A sad day indeed - never been a fan of opera, but I remember him watching Italy play on more than one occassion. Complete with a red-white-green scarf.

Sad that he's gone, although given his weight problems it probably wasn't unexpected that he would go before his time. Italia 90 was the first World Cup I remember watching seriously and the combination of the opera and Gazza's tears is a strong image of that tournament.

Amazing voice, big cheeky personality. Big footy fan. A sad and prolonged cancer battle left him almost a shadow of his former self before the end. A horrible horrible way to go. R.I.P.

celebrate him, 71 isnt a bad score, he traveled the world and had the best of absolutely everything. the way he has gone is terrible, and hopefully he wasnt in pain. thoughts go out to the family, im sure they were by his side.

Apparently his first stage performance ou8tside Italy was at Llangollen just down the road in N Wales, RIP

My Uncle Jack was in the merchant marine and he would bring back LP's of Cruso and many others from the latin shores. In fact it made me a great fan of the Opera and Symphony at a early age. I suppose this is why I enjoyed the creative works of Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes and Jethro Tull who all have been influenced by their own classical upbringing. Pavarrotti was such a great talent and very unique in his vocal inflection. The three tenors were a smash on these shores and brought the classics to main stream America. It put a positive spin on what seemed like a old stodgy genre to most.

RIP Luciano

good on ya big man.

He raised more money for refugees throughout the world than most having given numerous mega sell out concerts.

He was also a Bolshi [Poor language removed] wanting his own way all the time, a prima donna. He was booked for a Command performance in Edinburugh but refused to play as his rooms had no fitted kitchen, it gave him a buzz to see lackey's bend over backwards for him.
