Any deal for the 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund left-sided midfielder is predicted to be one-year loan deal with the option of a permanent move.
The South African international is a player with a big reputation and would be a major coup for David Moyes. Last summer a host of Premier League clubs, including the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool considered a bid for the 25-year-old but Dortmund stepped in first to snap up the promising midfielder with the intention of him replacing Tomas Rosicky and upon signing Piernaar from Dutch side Ajax, Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc said: "We're lucky to get a player of this quality, who has at his age acquired a lot of international experience in the Champions League and international games,"
However, the move to the Bundesliga has not been as successful as Pienaar would have hoped and he is now expected to test his ability in the Premiership.
